Charlie Cook: I expect net gains for Democrats in governorships of between six and a dozen, and a pickup for Democrats of between 400 and 650 state legislative seats, more than the average midterm loss of 375 seats for the party in the White House. These state elections are the most under-reported story in politics, with control of chambers likely tipping from Republicans to Democrats.

(129,104 posts)(and depending on the state) next year's, and 2020's elections, we need to have Democrats IN PLACE, up and down the state ballots, in order to be there for the 2020 census and redistricting. The subsequent 10 years will be on the line in terms of control at the federal level and that is what the GOP capitalized on in 2010.

(5,412 posts)i'd like to turn the federal legislature, but their push for an article 5 convention MUST be stopped.
if they wanted a balanced budget they could do it easily, without an amendment much less a convention.

(58,785 posts)State and local governments will use the data in reapportionment of voting districts, legislative, county, school boards, etc.
Also, if SCOTUS were to reverse large bodies of liberal-based federal laws controlling the states, the states would become empowered to make many decisions without federal constraint. The states would provide social safety net programs like Social Security and Medicaid. Or not. States could create their own healthcare systems that serve all, or they could refuse to entirely, or restrict eligibility to encourage chosen demographic groups to refugee to more advanced states.
Without federal programs based on things like the general welfare clause and federally-guaranteed rights based on the inferred right to privacy, the states could pass laws making abortion anywhere from illegal and punishable by 30 years in prison to completely legal. Rights regarding police surveillance and citizen rights would vary from state to state once they were no longer protected by federal law.
Etc.
And we know they would. It would be interesting, but the costs would be enormous. Many conservative parents today don't realize how easily they could grow old with their grandchildren growing up in some far state where their children could use contraceptives legally. Or what would happen to property values in declining towns and possibly whole states and regions in decline from conservative knuckledragging combined with devastation from climate change.
