Ford-Kavanaugh controversy has divided Americans -- even sexual assault survivors
By Erin Grace
A Nebraska Democrat says she was raped at age 17 by someone she knew. An Iowa Republican says she was almost raped three years ago by a stranger who attacked her in bed as she was sleeping.
The women share the same experience of being a sexual assault victim, of not reporting it to authorities and of grappling with the aftershocks years later. They also feel the triumph of not letting the assaults ruin them and the belief that others like Christine Blasey Ford deserve to be heard.
But when it comes to what to do about the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, the two women fall into their separate camps. The Democrat, who serves on the Gretna City Council, said Kavanaughs U.S. Supreme Court nomination should be voted down. The Republican, who is active in party politics in Iowa, said Kavanaugh should get the presumption of innocence.
Ford has accused Kavanaugh of pinning her to a bed and covering her mouth while trying to grope her and take her clothes off in the early 1980s when they were both teenagers. Kavanaugh vehemently denies the accusation.
