General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsGoodbye, DU! You've won!
Last night I was up all night after being lambasted for a post defending Susan Sarandon's right to say whatever she wanted.
I was called a liar and an enabler. I disagreed with what she said, but it was not my place to attack her for it. I was tired of seeing "See, Susan Sarandon what you have done?" thread. As for my criticism of Mrs. Clinton, I stand by what I have said. She is a brilliant policy thinker, but as a politician, she has shown to be lacking in the skills that made her husband and Obama more successful. Yes, she won by 3 million votes and yes, there were voting improprieties, but there was no reason for her and the Democrats to let Trump "win".
Well, DU, you have won. I am leaving.
And for those saying to me "good riddance!" and "goodbye", fine. This is defeating the purpose.
If the moderators do not like what I posted, feel free to ban me. I've already removed DU from my bookmark. There are other places for me to express my opinion. I can understand why others left two years ago to start their own website.
Do not get me wrong, I still believe in what DU stands for, but what I will not stand for is personal attacks. For this reason alone, after 17 years on the site, it's time for me to go.
I will vote for the straight Democratic ticket in November, but this is where this ends for me regarding posting here.
Goodbye, Democratic Underground.

(37,648 posts)She may think that Sarandon was just expressing an innocent, and maybe naive, opinion. But that's not what she was doing at all. She was pushing a movement she identifies with, like Nader was. She was fine with the country going with Trump, for people to lose health care, Social Security, food programs for children, for the whole world's environment and climate to suffer...as long as her movement benefited from it ultimately. When a listener realizes that, it changes the meaning of what she was doing. But a listener would have to know about her movement and realize what the movement is about.
I agree with the OP's criticism of Hillary, though. No politician is perfect. She has enough skills and is likable enough, though. People who can't accept any criticism of their candidate is entering a territory that is scary.
I remember when at one debate Obama turned in a terrible performance. It really was, which was the only time he wasn't great in a debate. There was a skit on SNL about it. I posted the video of that skit, and one poster got over the top upset about it. He just couldn't accept that anyone would even think, much less write, that Obama was imperfect at a debate. But the skit was really funny, if you had seen the debate. Everyone was talking about his performance at the debate, so why ignore reality? Obama himself even joked about it later. He had a great sense of humor. I miss that.

(12,618 posts)That's a bunch of crap. And no one is saying that Susan Sarandon doesn't have the right to say what she wants. But freedom of speech carries both consequences and responsibility, and if she's going to peddle harmful and destructive ideas, then we are going to call her out for it.
And we are damn sure we are never going to let her forget it or the horrible consequences of it.
If you can't handle that, then well, buh bye! But it's not defeating the purpose. It's recognizing the reality of what we're facing.

(7,947 posts)Any of us tomorrow in 20 minutes could set up a blog or political forum. We could say anything we want.
No one has to be on any forum they don't like... but to act like there's some denial of free speech really ignores the reality. You don't have to be HERE to say what you want. (You can say it here, of course, but assume those who disagree will say so.)
Even 20 years ago, we might be able to say that we don't have anyway to express our opinions, because we didn't own a radio station or newspaper.
But anyone can start a radio station or podcast. Anyone can start a news site.
Getting people to listen is still a problem, but being allowed and able to speak is not.

In fact using Bernie and AOC in the same breath as Sarandon is an insult to Bernie and AOC
Sarandon is a one-trick pony. She did the same thing in 2000
Susan Sarandon is NOT a friend or ally
She is an extremely wealthy person who will never have to worry about where her next meal is coming from, a roof over her head, or healthcare
She is equivalent to those in Germany in the thirties, who enabled the Nazis to come into power
If we never hear from her again it will be too soon, but if she makes her ugly appearance with her lies and bullshit, she deserves every bit of scorn and ridicule

(52,331 posts)Hillary was winning in nearly every poll and nearly every forecasting model, and nearly every predictive market for nearly every day of the entire campaign.
She lost only because of the combination of some of the biggest electoral crimes in our political history, including international espionage and campaign financing violations, and also including the biggest last-minute dirty trick in our political history as well. Even still, she overcame massive voter suppression efforts to still have a big majority, and lost only due to the targetted nature of the cheating and manipulation.
To blame Hillary would be results-mongering in the extreme if it weren't such an already debunked position. As it is, it's a completely disingenuous claim. Considering everything she was up against, including a media that gave her opponent about 80% of airtime and covered her largely only to talk about fabricated scandals, she did amazingly well.

The plain sad fact of the matter is that a few trolls or angry inconsiderate people can have a much greater impact than the vast majority here at DU who are thoughtful and kind.
17 years is a long time to be part of a community, then abandon it. For me, it's only been a little over 16 years.
Ideally our disagreements would be hashed out in the realm of fact and ideas, not personal invective -- but passions are high and those on the other side are viewed as enemies.
Trump is our enemy. McConnell is our enemy. Kavanaugh is our enemy.

(11,175 posts)That describes a lot of the posts here that, as the OP rightly notes, have downgraded the quality of the discussion on DU. The whining about Susan Sarandon is a notable example.
I personally disagreed with Sarandon's choice in 2016, but some posters' obsession with her is just silly. DU doesn't really need multiple threads every week denouncing Susan Sarandon.
Yes, I know, I can skip such threads -- and I usually do. Aside from the dedicated anti-Sarandon threads, though, her name gets dragged into other threads. It's just tiresome.
This is part of a broader problem, namely the hardening of a "DU Orthodoxy" set of opinions, much narrower than even the constraints of the ToS. I'm not at the GBCW stage but I do find myself spending less time here than I used to, because of the decline in the caliber of the discussion.

(41,864 posts)My girlfriend told me I need to fight for what I believe in, despite people coming down on you. In my case, I had gotten a few racist remarks sent to me in private. I either erased them or reported them, and yes there are some people who troll DU, looking to make problems. I Never posted at Discussionist, but my name came up some where there and I read the nasty posts they wanted me to see, how I was a fake, how what I said didn't matter cause I was a "Chink"..
But I came back. This Country is too important to me. My ancestors came from Japan to Work in the Sugarcane fields in Hawaii, met and married native Hawaiians,... had the shit scared out of them during Pearl Harbor and stayed close to home not wanting to attract attention that we had Japanese genes..but our family was True Hawaiian too... maybe that's why my folks left, Hawaii, they were fed up with things that went on there, with family and community and moved to San Francisco. They live in Vegas now...I still live the Bay Area in the City... pretty much alone.. But I have Juju now in San Diego as my best friend, and we are talking constantly like a sixteen year old who got her first telephone... spending hours with each other, even when she is at work..
Point is, DU is a place to come talk about politics and get involved. Take your time.. think about what you want to do.
Not many people know, that to say "Sayonara" is to say good bye in a semi permanent way. Its taken that many times people won't come back. To say good bye, knowing you will be back is to say "Mata ne" or "Jyaa mata" which both kind of mean, see you later, in Japanese culture, Just as Aloha has several meanings.. So I will simply say " Jyaa.. mata" . Its simply means.."well...see you later".

(22,236 posts)The problem I sometimes find with DU is that if you push for one candidate over another, even if it's ever so slightly, there are more than a few people who will automatically accuse you of hating the other candidate or candidates. Even though you might like them both, once you start favoring one ever so slightly, some posters get all bent out of shape and will accuse you of all kinds of nonsense if you don't favor their favorite person.
As far as your feelings about Hillary, I think I understand what you mean. I used to push for her passionately on this board a long time ago. Nowadays, not so much. IMO, Hillary running in 2016 is the main reason Trump is in the White House because of what the Right Wing did to her reputation over the last decade AND because she is not a good campaigner at all. Hillary is an amazing person who would I think would have made a very good president, but she was severely lacking as a campaigner.
Good luck to you in the future. You'll probably find your days a lot less stressful once you leave.

When you offer "DU Won", it appears that you are offering that you came here to win some sort of battle and you feel you got your ass kicked.

(392 posts)Whoever was the Democratic nominee in 2016 was going to be going against history due to our country almost always switching parties every 8 years.
It is very rare for a party to win 3 consecutive terms.
You combine that historical fact with Russia and James Comey, Hillary is the first candidate for President to go up against Russia and the FBI.
And despite it all, she still won by 3 million more votes.
Remarkable.
PS: Sexism and the media false equivalence between the two candidates were huge factors, too. Bernie didn't help either. Neither did the tax-payer funded witch-hunts into Benghazi and Hillary's e-mails (which the media would never shut up about).
It truly was a "perfect storm."
And yet Hillary still won by 3 million votes. Proves how brilliant she truly is.

"Gang! I finally did it
"Ive left SV for good. After being berated for defending Susan Sarandon for her right to free expression, the minions went after me."
I'm not sure if I'm one of the evil minions, but I'll survive either way. The only thing left to clear up is why we are now "SV" and not "DU." Can anyone fill me in on what SV stands for? I'm sure it's so horrible, I'll need oxygen when I find out, but I'm curious nonetheless (I haven't yet had a good laugh today). The only SV I know of would be Stevie Ray Vaughan minus the "R," and while I'd cherish the honor of the comparison (if only I could play the blues like Stevie did!), I suspect something else was meant.
