greatergoodusa.com

I've had this domain for a number of years. The ideas my partner and I had for it never materialized after he passed away. I don't really know why I kept renewing it, but it seemed like a good name for "something."

Last month I put up some content -- basically, for "me, myself, and I" (since I didn't have any specific plans about promoting it or working to sponsor any projects). Anyway, long story short, I'd like to get some feedback, so if you have a few minutes, check it out and let me know what you think of the content that is already up. And if you feel inclined to do some brainstorming about ways to take it further, drop me a message.

It's early days, I can see that. I would love to see you tackle the issue of big money in politics. Maybe this will end up being a great place for debate and thought sharing. Thanks!

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the site! And thanks for the vote of confidence.

It isn't really a "thing" yet -- and I'm not sure if I'll be able to take it somewhere -- but I've just been in survival mode for too long. I'm feeling the pull to connect and get engaged in a way that helps to inspire some hope in the face of this nightmare.

I meant to say I'm glad to hear you are hanging in there.

"Hanging in there" is heroic in the face of what is happening before our eyes. (Too often, I just have to shut my eyes to it all.)

-Good domain name. Catchy, humanitarian. Good for search engines.
-Who is you audience?
-General Democratic politics or focus on an issue?
-Lose the standard Wordpress layout. People are over blogrolls, calendars, tags.

To be very cheesy, If you build it, they will come.

I'm not sure if I am taking this anywhere so the audience -- who they are and how to effectively reach and engage -- is undefined.

Business plans for a citizen lobbyist support entity "way back when" were derailed when my partner died in 2011. My life since has been a bit of a roller coaster, but the desire to resurrect some of the ideas in some form that didn't call for an infusion of capital has been at the back of my mind (the capital we intended to invest in the original plan was gobbled up in the mortgage mess, but that is another story).

Anyway, with the notion that "someday" I would "do something" I registered the name (I like it too) and then just sat on it. I'm not sure what inspired me to put up the site last month -- it expresses my beliefs, but I didn't have any plans for promoting it or making it into something "real." After I did it, I felt a little silly putting up a site that no one would see. A month later, I'm not sure what possessed me to "go public" (if only in a small way) by posting here. Perhaps just a desire to connect with like-minded others as I take a few baby steps toward figuring out where I might try to take GreaterGoodUSA.

As far as "general" vs. "issue."
If I find a way to take this somewhere, the focus would be on promoting campaigns that enlist people and other groups in targeted lobbying for things that go to core principles. I think there are basic rationalizations for inaction that are best challenged by calling on our so-called leaders to defend a morally indefensible position. For example, one of those rationalizations is "can't win, so won't fight." This is invoked as a reason for inaction on a myriad of issues. If we can whittle away at the general rationalization, we start to open the door to change in many areas. I believe the best way to challenge "can't win, so won't fight" is by calling for action in a situation where inaction is a violation of a principle that should be inviolable. For example, way back when, we had some success in "waking up" a few people as we lobbied to impeach Bush for torture. When push comes to shove, "can't win, so won't fight" is hard to sustain on such a basic question. If you aren't willing to stand up and utterly repudiate torture, win or lose, how can you claim you have any principles at all? I

As far as Word Press replacement, what do you think of a Joomla site based on the following template:

At first I thought it might be a 'Buy Blue' sort of concept. I still miss buyblue.org. The all-knowing consumer can right a lot of wrongs. Perhaps you might consider a 'villain's corner' list where you identify bad actors and perhaps some of the products they sell.

I still avoid Koch products by choice. Absolutely the Worst People.

Content is king. Getting people to come back requires useful or entertaining content.

Keep going! Build!

It's so interesting that you mentioned it. Their use of data and user input and ratings was fantastic and engaging. I really loved them too.

Apologies in advance for the length

------ Background on the original idea -------------------

The original notion for GreaterGoodUSA was to create an organization that engaged and provided support services for individuals and groups lobbying at the federal level. We were looking at piloting it in our own congressional district, recruiting members door-to-door if necessary. The big dream was to eventually go nationwide. We would have a staff of "Citizen Lobbyists" in each district or state that members could "hire" to lobby for specific actions in face-to-face meetings and communications with members of the House and Senate (or more commonly staffers). At any given time, the top two or three actions in a district or state (or more, depending on number of citizen lobbyists we had) would be identified though voting with "voice points" that members earned either by taking some action themselves in an existing campaign (like signing a petition or sending an email or fax through a hosted app that could track the actions) or by providing financial support at a given level.

The types of actions we would take on would have to meet a defined set of parameters (to prevent getting "hijacked" to support something abhorrent and to steer toward efforts in areas we identified as truly pivotal.) We would also publish supporting materials targeted to groups and individuals who wanted to do their own direct lobbying – guidance in how to get their own meetings and be more effective when they got there.

A key component was to be "up to the minute" on reporting back on member actions, meetings and meeting follow-up communications to get answers to unanswered questions (along with solicitation for others to call to ask to get answers too, when answers were not forthcoming). We believed feedback is the key to engagement. To often we take some action and have no idea “what happened.”

The philosophy of lobbying was not just to go to "be heard," but to ask key questions that forced the person on the other side of the table to defend a morally indefensible position (like "can't win, so won't fight" on a core moral principle they should be standing up for, win or lose).

Implementing the business plan required a substantial infusion of cash. Staff to coordinate tracking and reporting. Citizen lobbyists. Technical web services. Another belief of ours was that “our side” is too reliant on volunteer efforts or people paid a pittance. As a service and support organization providing valuable services, we were committed to having a "launch" budget and creating a membership model that enabled us to hire enough staff at reasonable compensation to provide the services promised. In "pitches" we compared the model on "our side" of the spectrum to opening a business service provider, such as a Kinko’s, by going around the neighborhood asking for money to get off the ground. "Real" businesses don't start that way because it doesn't work. They invest up front and open their doors as full service providers -- and then succeed or fail. We envisioned the same thing. The organization would open it's virtual and brick and mortar doors fully capable of providing a core set of services that could be expanded if we actually had success recruiting sufficient members willing to make a small financial commitment sustain it. We happened to be in a good financial position ourselves at the time and were soliciting other investors. Tragically, fortunes turned (but that is another story). Then my partner died, and along with that, my capacity to pursue the plan.

--------------------------------------------------

Anyway, this is a very, very long way around to get back to the beginning. (If you were even able to wade through all that).

BuyBlue's use of data, feedback, individual input and ratings, and offering a truly tangible, valuable, service, was indeed along the same lines. They were a fantastic thing. I fear they just didn't have a financial model that could sustain the effort. At this point, I don't have the financial wherewithal or time to carryout our original "big dream," but want to do something -- I just don't have a concrete picture yet of what. If GreatGoodUSA ever did take off (dream, dream…), I would love to be able to hire people (perhaps connecting with the folks who started it all those years ago) to implement a BuyBlue2 project under the auspices of GreaterGoodUSA – a project structured in a way that would compensate and be financially viable for the people doing the research and maintaining the site.
