yesterday afternoon. She had evacuated and was safe, but mentioned texts from people who had stayed. Those texts seemed to indicate that her house, just across the road from the water, was destroyed. It was hard to listen to.

talk to MSNBC. I'm still waiting to hear how St. George Island weathered the hurricane. It's to the east of landfall, but is a narrow barrier island covered with houses. Many people stayed there until it was too late to evacuate. I suppose we'll get a report from there today sometime.

A guy said his neighbor was riding out the storm and this morning her house is gone and there's no sign of her. Another couple said a house hit their condo.

you wonder how much water damage they had. Just because they're still standing doesn't mean they're not destroyed beyond repair.
