What is the difference between having son and having a daughter? I have both.

When my son goes out, I tell him to be careful and be smart. I worry about his safe return.

When one of my daughters goes out, I am terrified. One of my daughters is taking a bus home from college for her Fall break. It is about a 5 hour bus ride. Here is what I tell her:

1. Don't talk to anyone on the bus.
2. Don't talk to anyone at the bus stop.
3. Don't leave the area immediately around the bus.
4. Don't go to the bathroom at the bus stop.
5. Make sure you phone is fully charged. Leave it on at all times.

Paranoid? Overboard? Maybe. But I won't relax until she is at home.

Trying to, in any way, equate what women face and what men face when it comes to their well being in public or private is facetious bullshit. Thats my .02.

I wonder if dads worry excessively about daughters. Media portrays it like that. For example, all the jokes about dads being over protective of daughters when they are dating, but they never seem to be that way with their sons. I'm a mom, but I only have sons. They are almost 16 and 9. My biggest concerns are that the almost 16 year old is actually doing his school work and I just hope he doesn't crash up my car while he practices driving. I wouldn't be any different if they were girls though, because I'm a girl. I know what it is like. I'm just a person and I can manage to take care of myself just like any other man or woman in this world. I would have been annoyed with my parents if they were overprotective of me as a child or young adult. Thank goodness they weren't like that.

I will teach a son and daughter the same things.

Respect other people's rights, but don't be a pushover.

Practice awareness of what is happening around them, situations, people ect. Always plan out an escape route from any situation.

Pay attention to where they are walking or parking. Don't go into isolated, lowly trafficked areas at anytime.

Never agree to something that they don't feel 100% comitted to.

Each will be taught basic self defense techniques that they can use to weaken an attacker and allow them to escape to safety.

My philosophical goal would be to make no distinction between a son and a daughter in terms of their rights and responsibilities.
