Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsA Moment From Black America About Kanye West....
Kanye has been lost to us since the College Dropout, his last good CD. This was before his late Mother passed as a result of the after effects of an elective surgery.
Once Ms. West passed on, Kanye has been losing his mind -- seeking attention since.
From Marrying Kim K.
To Verbally Attacking Taylor Swift at an Awards Show.
To a Failed Clothing (No One In The African-American Community Want To Buy His BEEP....) Line to a Sneaker Line that no one cares about.
Kanye West was lost to us WAY BEFORE him launching like a sycophant in need of a bottle of attention -- on to Drump.
Remember, Kanye West is a Mental Case. Since he lost his Late Mother, he has had at least two -- if not more Breakdowns.
Kanye West does NOT (REPEAT, DOES NOT) speak or in anyway represents the African-American community.
Furthermore, while folks homes and personal belongings are drowning in the Florida Panhandle, Kanye West "visits" the Drump White House to (YES WE ARE SPEAKING THIS TRUTH) Shuck N Jive for Drump, Jared and Ivanka on CAMERA for 10 Minutes. #Deplorable
Again, for one last understanding -- KANYE WEST DOES NOT REPRESENT, SPEAK FOR OR ANYTHING ELSE for the African-American Community.
He's Dead To Us.

(53,778 posts)You couldn't be any clearer. West is delusional to the max as he thinks he's a genius.
He famously, infamously really, once said slavery was a choice and now he wants the 13th Amendment rescinded, as if his honorary "white" status will keep him from being re-enslaved. What a tomming fool.

Other than that, Kanye is just a broke guy trying to attach himself to the people in power in an attempt to get money. When a Democrat wins the White House, all of a sudden he will be a Democrat again and will likely try to claim he was forced to support Donald Trump.

To be perfectly honest, I had no idea who Kayne West actually was until recently, but my son's told me who he was. They are involved with listening to rap than I could ever be, and know something about that world.
I actually don't. For me the richness by which African Americans have blessed our country's culture for far less reward than deserved for such magnificence has very little to do with this guy.
I sometimes wonder peripherally what it is that those Kardashian people are famous for, but have never actually been interested enough to look into it. I'm not even sure what race they belong to, but whatever they are, it's not like they're Michelle Obama.

(1,975 posts)As an "old white male" (well 43 isnt that old ) it's not my place to judge him if he is or isnt representative of Black People. Do I have opinions? Sure, I liked what he had to say honestly. If it takes a Kanye to say on tv that the Industrial Prison Complex is a form of slavery, fine. Am I mad he dropped an F bomb in the oval office? Not really, it's a fake code of decorum for cameras. I would hope to doG that passionate real talk is being used there in that office.
Now to be fair, I didnt get a chance to hear his whole speach. I'm also in the camp of "black person" theory. Meaning, I dont think that one black person represents the community. Just like if I said something in my past that was hurtful to them, there isnt one "black person" i can apologize to and receive absolution from. I would apologize to anyone that felt they wanted one.

(5,124 posts)As a person of color - I get tired of his theatrics and there are times that I've said he's canceled. I will not support his music.
However- Given that he has BPD and not on meds - none of what he does is surprising to me
He said today - he was misdiagnosed. I am not buying that. He could not stay on topic - Jumping around from one train of thought to the next. Flight of ideas. Thats a real thing with BPD and other forms of mental illnesses. That might not seem important to some - in psychiatry - that is one thing that often clues us in - its not the only thing he did, but I picked up on that immediately- his sentences did not connect.
Its a shame that he is being exploited and he does not realize it. Its a shame that there is no one in his circle to pull him off the ledge.
On the other hand - I would love for us to have an honest conversation in this country about mental health - we only talk about it when there is a tragedy. What does someone with mental illness look like? Long before they " snap?"

Sad about his mom but we all lose parents at some point.
Unfortunately, mental health issues still carry a certain stigma.

(1,170 posts)I have been in remission for over 10 years from bipolar II disorder. The beauty of bipolar II over bipolar I like what Kanye is surely suffering from is that there's a greater chance that you'll seek and then stay with your medication and therapy with bipolar II. I'm very lucky and he most definitely is not.
I feel extremely bad for him. Given that his conditional is cyclical, a manic episode like what he was so loudly demonstrating today is only setting him up for a tremendous period of depression that will surely follow. I wouldn't wish what he's going through on my worst enemy and the fact that Trump would exploit him the way he did absolutely disgusts me.
But then, everything that asshole does disgusts me.
tulipsandroses
(5,124 posts)Yes, I can not only bear witness to that professionally, but personally. I've watched family members go through manic phases followed by debilitating depression that put them right back in the hospital.
My family members with BPD - the Depression is the worst. Its funny how the media portrays people with Bipolar - Because quite often- The majority of time is spent in the Depressed Phase. That to me is the most devastating. From a personal standpoint. Its crippling and debilitating. People can't work, they can't go to school, marriages are destroyed, parents don't play with kids,. Meds take longer to stabilize in this phase. The mania meds tend to work faster to break mania. That crippling depression takes a lot longer to break.
Again - I don't know who in his circle is able to get to him. Or is brave enough, loves him enough to perhaps have him involuntarily admitted again and have court ordered treatment. I've had to do that for my loved ones. While some of us are laughing. This is deadly serious. BPD - has the highest rate of suicide. And I had one family member indeed, attempt suicide this year. Thankfully her attempt was unsuccessful.
And so, while Kanye's antics anger me. I still have compassion for what is happening to him. And even moreso given that he is being exploited in so many ways, Not only by Trump. But the companies that are still depending on him to make money for them.
For the older folks that had no idea who he is, they are making all kinds of jokes about him without understanding. his place in hip hop and pop culture.
I was reading recently that his album debut #1 as usual on Billboard, then took a nosedive its 2nd and 3rd week- Do we think record company execs want to make sure they recoup their money they put up? I read somewhere that the money made already does not cover what was spent on the artists he sampled. - I don't know anything about the music business but maybe they might want him out there to gain " new MAGA fans"
Its really quite a sad spectacle all around.

(81,267 posts)this perspective, LovingA2andMI. He sure seems to crave attention. My husband watched his ridiculous camera-hogging and noted Jim Brown was sitting right there, and had NO time to speak, nor did any of the other people there who undoubtedly had important points to make as well. They got zilch. Kanye sucked it all up, mainly to talk about himself. I can see why that resonates with trump, though. Birds of a feather I guess.

(4,447 posts)Please feel free to correct me if I have this wrong. It's been my understanding that characterizing the entire African American community based on what any one individual says or does is a form of racism. The African American community is no more monolithic than any other community, and therefore, I would not think that any one individual who happens to be African-American could possibly speak for an entire community.
I don't even understand why this needs to be a reminder. I can understand the necessity for the reminder, but what I'm saying is that it shouldn't be a necessity!
I dislike Kanye West because he uses his public platform to support Trump and says a lot of completely ridiculous shit along the way. To be honest, I lump him in with Ted Nugent and Kid Rock. Crazy, ill-informed, and not too bright. If there's any community he does speak for, it's slack-jawed, mouth-breathing, crazy-assed Trumpers.

President Duh Donald didn't think enough of you to ensure that you were present for the signing of that Digital Millenium Music Modernization Act -- I guess he figured that one black attendee was enough (Sam "And Dave" Moore), and that hiphop didn't need to be represented. P.S. He's moved back to his native Chicago without his family, which suggests that his days as a Krap-Trashy-an are numbered.
