(94,571 posts)Of course, the Union pension funds and middle class investors lost money too, but who cares?

I have a fair amount of money in there myself.

(11,256 posts)We are later cycle of a bull run. Powells comments along with any future strong economic numbers reinforce the case for higher rates. This will cap the equity market in the short term, so a little correction is in order after this run.

(7,888 posts)Good question, perhaps it will close higher? I think it is reflecting the insanity of greed. Those holding "short" positions will make a killing, pun intended.
"Irrational enthusiasm" was Greenspan's excuse when he explained why he failed to predict the unregulated markets were doomed to fail.

(19,066 posts)If you aren't retiring any time soon do not worry, it will come back. If you're close to retirement you should have been moving out of the market already.

(11,914 posts)What timing are you thinking is close? Within a year? In the next 4 yrs, 10yrs, etc.?
Johnny2X2X
(19,066 posts)If you're planning on retiring in the next 5 years you should have started pulling out of the stock market.

(11,914 posts)The other thing is that I opted to be very conservative in my investments. So far it's been slow and steady.

(19,066 posts)Get a good adviser. Also, there's a reason corporations do an 80-20 split on stocks and bonds for their investments. Max return with little risk.

(11,885 posts)The trump slump will crash the economy , and get worse when trump starts another war for profit and for political reasons for himself. Most could see this coming and its just the start of it. The trump slump will prove badly for trump and the gop and Mid Terms, and they'll lose both the House and the Senate. They've already talked about how they'll destroy Social Security , and all the health care we have, so they're digging their own graves. Trump again will blame others from his incompetence. This will snowball into worse soon.

(6,535 posts)(disclaimer: I don't know jack shit about the stock market; I just assume the whole system is set up to keep itself running and enriching the people at the top of the pyramid, and they rely on civilization not collapsing and stuff like that, so hopefully they're just intent on fleecing us for the moment, and not just outright slaughtering us or selling us on the open market to intergalactic slave-lords or something...haha...j/k...and/or we won't end up with "all your debt belongs to us now" from Vlad and his chaps will we?)

(14,565 posts)Massive amount triggered by reaching a certain number on the way down, and it pushed the market below sentiment and fundamentals for today. so there was a steady buy back.
Market has recovered quite a bit but there could still be an unrelated sell off at close. That is typical when the direction is down after days like yesterday and today.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)It has moved around 400 points in the past hour, from 700 to 300 and now back to 500.
Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)It had recovered to down 230 or thereabouts but now down 490 and dropping all the time.
I'm heavily invested and am getting hammered but I don't mind the timing of this for political purposes.
A Friday (tomorrow) should be another drop under these conditions. Panic sets in on Friday and also the trading programs are active with selling

(48 posts)Thanks for the conversation even though I was not a participant. Cool.

(14,565 posts)Dow futures are way up for tomorrow so I might have been wrong about another down day.
Fridays are normally sell offs during downturns but that is more true at the end of the month when the mutual fund managers, pension fund managers and hedge fund managers sell to lock in a profit for that month or quarter. That doesn't apply now because we are in the middle of the month.
Even if tomorrow is positive I would still expect a downturn to end the day, at least to small degree. Late Friday during a poor week is almost always a gulp of reality of more bad times ahead, leading to some selling.
