Brian was the heart, and genius, of the Beach Boys. Mike was the voice.

Yes, you can be a talented performer as Mike Love was, and still be a douche. If Mike had just kept his right wing views to himself, he may have maintained some respectability. I kinda like Kokomo, as cheesy as it is.

Look at the songs credits from their "golden era". Damn near every one was written by Brian Wilson. Mike Love got added on for many credits and some of those credits are minimal contributions at best. That's been one of the biggest fights between the original members for years as to how much each contributed. Love in his autobiography made claims to certain lyrics that just aren't true.

Mike Love has always been an incorrigible attention seeker who was intensely jealous of Brian's talent. When Brian's mental health began to deteriorate, Love took it upon himself to preserve to Beach Boys and he has continued to magnify his own importance to the band. If anyone doubts that, I'd suggest checking out YouTube for the video of the bands Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Love practically rips the mic out of Brian's hand to gain the spotlight.
