pissed. Someone please post the video how for years a county in Texas has deliberately kept college students from voting using some of the most hateful tactics they can. It is unreal.

(3,344 posts)It is getting worse, not better. The Supreme Court started hacking away at the VRA.
And now they have total control for a generation.
This is why we told people to vote Democratic in 2016. As in Democratic, not Green.

(31,401 posts)Chilling story of arresting the field director of the Democratic Congressional candidate for taking a photo of delivering a letter demanding the County not to make it more difficult for the students at the 82% African American university to vote after he was asked what party the candidate represented.
Chilling.

(62,444 posts)DUers tend to be outstandingly ignorant of the various structural barriers to young people voting.
Simple things like proving residency when one is sharing an apartment with friends, but not actually on the lease or utility bills, are beyond the capability of cranky old farts to comprehend.

https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/campaign-worker-arrested-after-iding-his-candidate-as-democrat
By this time, Aronowitz is walking out of the courthouse with his mission accomplished when hes stopped by a county sheriffs deputy who asks who he is and what hes doing. Soon enough Aronowitz is surrounded by a court bailiff, a sheriffs deputy and a city police officer. Aronowitz asks whether he is free to go or whether hes under arrest. He also calls the candidate, Mike Siegel, whos also a civil rights attorney. So Siegel is listening to the conversation and advising Aronowitz what to do as hes being questioned and not allowed to leave.
Siegel didnt say this to me in so many words. But from his description of the back and forth, it seems like that the law enforcement officers werent happy with Aronowitz but werent clear what exactly they could charge him with or if they could arrest him. After Aronowitz explained what he was at the courthouse to do and then identified himself, one of the officers asked Aronowitz which party his candidate was with.
Aronowitz told them Siegel was a Democrat. A couple minutes later the phone went dead and Aronowitz was placed under arrest for what he was told was 48 hour investigative detention.

(32,722 posts)When most of us baby boomers were in college (40+ years ago) college students were expected to register and vote in their home district. A student's college address was not a permanent residence, and in most cases your college address didn't even show on your student ID.
When voters are required to show your ID, it needs to include your permanent residence which would be your parents' address if you're an underage student. So for that reason college towns didn't have a lot of out of state students registered to vote because the kids were voting at home.
Nowadays, more students use their college address as their permanent address for identification purposes. That carries over into drivers license and voter registration records, but not every college town has accepted or encouraged this. It sounds like some are even discouraging it, but of course that would be illegal.

Civility my ass. These bastards are determined to win at all costs. They don't care to play by rules. Do not talk to me about being civil.

(9,090 posts)here are the number of limbaugh stations endorsed by 5 texas universities:
Texas A&M 9, Texas Tech 4, Texas 1, Texas Christian 1, Baylor 1
that's 9 limbaugh stations that love that they can broadcast A&M games to help them attract advertisers and would hate for A&M students and communities to make a stink about it because the stations would start losing advertisers
all those stations that broadcast limbaugh are contributors to this racist crap and voter suppression - that's what the immigration issue is really about
aside from the A&M community making that an issue and really pissing off the cons, anyone in the country can also record those shows, get them transcribed fast and easy and cheaply, list the advertisers and their web sites, and thank them for the racism and trumpism and cheating.
republicans depend heavily on those stations and those stations need national advertisers.
