It's unbelievable I still see this posted.
By both the right and the left.
Reality:
Out of 258 Democrats total in Congress 111 voted for the Iraq Resolution.
Out of 270 Republicans total in Congress 263 voted for the Iraq Resolution

She was the only member of Congress to vote against the use of force after 9/11. Now, shes finding unlikely allies in her campaign against Americas forever war: Republicans.

(29,322 posts)I remember Robert Byrd. A much better Senator than Manchin.
Also I wonder who that Independent Congressman was that voted no?

I haven't thought about the war vote in awhile so I'm glad you're bringing it up.

(52,166 posts)Byrd was horrible on this own levels. Yes he war vote was good but many of his votes were every bit as bad as or worse than Manchin's.

(23,570 posts)that he was fooled by Colin Powell and would have voted for the war. He even admitted to laughing at w's joke about looking for WMDs. He wasn't proud of it and learned from his mistakes. That said, lots of democrats voted for the war. Yes, they were given false information. Yes, they appeared to trust the republicans in the administration. We just have to hope that they learned from it as Senator Franken did.

(54,445 posts)Much of it was of an "if it should be proved that....." nature.
Most of the clauses were contingencies that were either never proven or outright lies. "Should it be proved that George W. Bush eats live babies for breakfast and Dick Cheney has the leftovers for lunch, the USA shall be expelled from the UN." That kind of thing.

(54,445 posts)I think most Democrats that voted for it did so thinking "if it turned out to actually be true, and action was warranted, we are obligated to support such action. I'll bet plenty of them didn't realize they were being led into voting for giving Cheney a blank check to undertake a useless military adventure in order to bring prosperity to his company.
The "if this should prove to be true" part was interpreted deliberately by the Republicans to mean, "well, we'll just assume it's true and act accordingly."

(15,489 posts)That war was a complete disaster. Bush should have been impeached for the lies he told Congress.
