Its looking more and more likely that Secretary of Defense James Mattiss days in the Trump administration are numbered. If he leaves, experts say it could make an already shambolic presidency even more chaotic.
The greatest sign of Mattiss ouster is an interview President Donald Trump gave to CBSs 60 Minutes on Sunday, in which he insulted his defense chief and left the door open for the secretarys departure.
I think hes sort of a Democrat, if you wanna know the truth, Trump told Lesley Stahl. But General Mattis is a good guy. We get along very well. He may leave. I mean, at some point, everybody leaves. Everybody. People leave. Thats Washington.
Mattis, a retired four-star Marine Corps general, is considered by many outsiders to be one of the presidents best Cabinet members in part because hes seen as a strong check on Trumps worst national security impulses.

(113,078 posts)Putin and Trump's enemy now. Trump is appealing to his base to stay on his side while he attacks Mattis, and that is why he is calling him a democrat. Trump's base has been conditioned to exalt Putin and hate democrats.
Trump really is that easy to assess. Funny how most news media seem to have trouble figuring it out.

(1,376 posts)Except - as evidenced by the situation with Sessions and everyone else - Trump is too much the coward to attempt to fire Secretary Mattis face to face, so - just like with Kelly - Trump can continue to whine like the infant he is and Mattis can - and will - simply ignore him.
Plus, of course, we all know that deep down, Trump the draft dodger is terrified of people like Mattis, who have more integrity and courage in their little finger on their worst day than four generations of Trumps, going from Grandpa Trump the Pimp down to Trump's sons the cowards, could all assemble in their entirety on their collective best days.

(1,975 posts)I think is a damning statement against his Secretary of Defense. Unless being an arsonist or a demon or the other insults he has been throwing at us is good character for SecDef.
How many adults work in the White House again? The number is getting smaller and smaller and I think depending on how these midterms turn out, Itll get less and less. Because he sure as shit doesnt think "America" or at least his base which hopefully shrinks in November doesnt care what he does.
