I have read many articles by "never Trumpers" and others where the premise is that Trump is not really the GOP. The argument is that Trump is an aberration, and does not truly represent the GOP.
Nonsense.
The GOP has been the party of racism since 1968, when Richard Nixon made the Southern strategy the key to his success. Nicxon appealed to racists from every state, especially in the south, where the GOP became the all bit official party of southern racists. That strategy of appealing to racists worked for the GOP in 1968 and 1972.
There was a brief interruption when Carter won in 1976, but the GOP national racism was on full display in 1980 when Ronald Reagan opened his campaign at a Mississippi fairgrounds notorious for being the site of many large KKK rallies.
Reagan used thinly coded language to appeal to the more genteel racists.
In 1988, George H. W. Bush used another form of racism in the Willie Horton strategy.
Fasy forward to 2015, as Trump abandoned coded language and openly engaged in brutally racist speech as he appealed to the most deplorable and uninformed of GOP voters.
The Nazis and proud boys and KKK boys marching are the GOP. McConnell and Ryan are just as racist, just as hateful, but they hide behind the same coded language that Reagan used.

(13,877 posts)Talk is cheap...on both sides. Votes, OTOH, are official and recorded. Talk to the young folk, especially. They will make the difference. They are under-reported in polls, for the most part. Colleges...big recruiting territory. Publicize the local voting places. There should be one on each campus because students don't always have the best transportation. Hopefully there are some there.
