Islamic Center Of Pittsburgh Offers To Stand Outside Of Synagogue To Protect Jews
The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh offered to stand guard outside of the synagogue to protect Jewish people as they worship.
The leader of the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh announced that they have raised over $70,000 for the victims of the attack, and said, We just want to know what you need. You know, if its more money, lets us know. If it is people outside of your next service protecting you, let us know. Well be there. If you need organizers on the ground, well provide them. If you need food for the families, if you just need someone to come to the grocery store because you dont feel safe in the city, well be there, and Im sure everybody in the room would say the same thing. Were here for the community.

Hate doesnt win
Americans are very good at pulling together to donate money after a tragedy, but the Islamic Center showed the spirit that runs through the city of Pittsburgh. Muslims are willing to stand guard to protect Jews so that they can feel safe in their house of worship. The community wont be fractured or defeated by one act of hate.
As Trump and his administration turn this horrific act of mass murder into an attack on the free press, the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh showed that the culture of division and intolerance is inspiring cant defeat the soul of Pittsburgh and the nation as a whole.
Hate cant win, because the bonds that keep us together are stronger than the tactics of those who try to tear us apart.

(15,154 posts)We sang Amazing Grace in church choir this past Sunday and I was reminded of Barack singing it at AME. Our organist is a fabulous composer as well and her version brought tears to my eyes as we sang.
I belong to a wonderfully progressive Episcopal church and at times like these, it helps to get through the week. During the "Prayers of the People" segment, the lay minister read out the eleven names and ages of the dead from Pittsburgh. A number of our members attended a service at our local synagogue on Saturday night as well.

The only question left is how many Moderate Republicans will start to pull out...yes, even Republicans turning toward the Democratic ideals. We need to welcome them, IMO.

He didn't even wait a day before restarting his vile hate-fest. He should be shunned until he ceases to foment and advocate terrorism.

(13,421 posts)Not gonna lie, there's an ugly faction running around out there that would see that as a sort of "two-fer" if they took out the Muslims guards and a bunch of Jews at the same time. Makes me shudder.
Now, if the fundies wanted to stand out there along with everyone else, maybe it would dissuade the crazy racists. Maybe. How can anybody predict the actions of anybody that's so dead in their soul?

(13,877 posts)One of the oldest of the gospel hymns....Onward, Christian Soldiers. The words are a bit disturbing in hindsight. I know very well the history of the Christian Nation...beginning in 1,000 AD. White European is another moniker that is linked with it, as well. We're surely not a Muslim nation, or a Hindu nation...they have their own.
Like saying we are not a waring nation...we have over 800 military bases all over the globe. That's a pretty broad designation, as well. All there to connect the military power grid of the aformentioned ideals. And I guarantee you there aren't any churches but Christian-based on any of them.
On Edit: It is that the "others" are rising in numbers and the balance of power is shifting. That's, IMO, the frustration that Trump played into. "You may not be special anymore."

(29,094 posts)"Christian 'flag'"? There is no such thing
In addition, you must remember that, unlike many
other nations, ours chose NOT to have a state religion.
At a point on history where the vast majority of the Western World was Christian, a number of our Founding Fathers subscribed to
Deism, not Christianity, that ancient song notwithstanding.
As for the "others" you see as replacing Christianity, those may be no religion at all, given that atheism is one of the fastest growing "beliefs" in the US.

(29,094 posts)Not the Catholic church which, is, btw, the most commonly practiced form of Christianity in the US today.
As to its supposed influence in founding this country, it wasn't even in existence until 1942, so that doesn't work.
Coventina
(27,172 posts)You said there was no Christian flag, I showed you there was.
I'm not defending it, I loathe American Christianity, but that doesn't mean it's not a potent symbol for those who identify with it.
Like the black banners of ISIS and Al-Qaeda, it's a minority, but a potent one.
whathehell
(29,094 posts)As for its being a "potent symbol" again, it:s not even used by all the Protestantt sects, let alone Catholicism, THE most common form of Christianity practiced here today, so I think not.

President Donald Trump will be the first sitting president to address the Family Research Councils Values Voter Summit, which the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) described as a rogues' gallery of the radical right.
Trump will be the keynote speaker at Friday's event, which will also be attended by his former strategist, Steve Bannon. Other speakers include the founder of anti-Islam group ACT for America and former Trump strategist, Sebastian Gorka.
The anti-LGBTQ Family Research Council, labeled as a hate group by the SPLC, has hosted its annual summit since its inception in 2006.
"Values voters have waited eight years for a leader who puts America's mission first and respects the values that made America into a great nation, the council's president Tony Perkins said in a statement reported by The Hill.
Values voters are coming to our nations capital thankful to hear from a president who is fulfilling the promises that he campaigned on. Since the early days of the campaign, President Trump allied himself with values voters, promising to put an end to the eight years of relentless assault on the First Amendment, he added.
No other sitting president has ever taken the decision to address the summit, although Trump has spoken before the conference on three previous occasionseven during his presidential election campaign.
Speaking of the presidents decision to attend this years 12th annual event, SPLC President Richard Cohen told The Independent: By appearing at the Values Voter Summit, President Trump is lending the legitimacy of his office to a hate group that relentlessly demonizes LGBTQ people and works to deny them of their equal rights.
"His appearance puts the lie to his campaign promise to be a friend to the LGBTQ community. Bigotry is not an American value, and our president should speak out against it, he added.

(53,989 posts)So, we will stand in your streets and give the Jews of America plain words about the promise God pronounced through His prophets that you have a desolate house, because of your sins. Further, that you will all be brought to Israel and (eventually) Jerusalem from all points of the globe where God will slaughter all of the Jewish race, except for 144,000 who will be granted the gift of repentance. We, like Christ, weep at the contemplation of it; yet we must warn you, so that you will be bound by the knowledge and peradventure there may be some of Gods elect Jews dwelling among you. Thus, we will #ShowUpForShabbat with glorious words from the King of Kings and Lord of Lords: Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matthew 4:17)
