What is he seeing? Sure GA and FL are too close, only because of all of the shit and shenanigans the rethugs have been pulling. But what else is he seeing that is making him "less hopeful"?
So far, I like what I'm seeing. So far..

(42,862 posts)That's a marriage made in... who knows where... that I absolutely DO NOT understand. I guess there's "someone for everyone" but as far as I'm concerned, I could NEVER be in a politically mixed-marriage. Never. EVER!

(2,795 posts)You must have to have some understanding that either you don't talk politics or you try to keep it on a very superficial level.

(2,795 posts)I was never thinking we'd win 40+ seats and the senate. I'm always hopeful, but the American people can't be trusted to deliver.
I expect the worst and hope I'm pleasantly surprised. That's the cynic in me.

(2,140 posts)Not for any reason other than the Republicans have gerrymandered everything.
Recall, Hillary won the popular vote. So have others, good people like VP Gore, who nonetheless went home while the minority party took power over the wishes of the people. This has happened over and over again, in fact.
This country's democracy is ailing. It is easy to imagine that everything is fine, or everything will work out somehow. The fact is, things might not work out. And things are not normal. It is impossible to underestimate the depth of the work needed to restore our democracy, and I don't know if we can do it.
The problem is not with the American people. Overwhelmingly people reject the incipient fascism of the Republican party. The problem is the legacy of slavery hard-wired into our system that gives greater weight to empty acreage in Wyoming than a crowded borough in New York, and everything that follows from it. Make no mistake about it: the crisis we face, even if we win everything this year from now on, is a crisis as severe as any this country has faced, and I am including the Civil War.
I see three realistic outcomes: One, our democracy dies, and we have a right-wing authoritarian racist and militarist dictatorship for decades to come. Two, our nation collapses, possibly through a bloody civil war, or possibly through states withdrawing from the union in a manner where the weakened central government does not have the power or the desire to hold the union together. Three, we build a people power mass movement that compels those in office to make the necessary reforms, including multiple amendments or a rewrite of the Constitution to address the structural failings of our system, or, failing that, a nonviolent popular "color revolution" to compel democratic reforms.
That mass movement is needed, not just to pressure for change, but also as a step towards restoring civil society. Ours has collapsed. People have become isolated, and civil society is the foundation stone upon which healthy democracy is planted.
I don't say this in order to discourage others. I say this in hope that concerned patriots commit themselves to the best possible outcome, to build a people's movement to reform and strengthen American democracy. No nation that so strongly opposes a demagogue should find ourselves outvoted, ever. It's not enough to just show up and vote every other year. One bright light is that progressives and the Democratic rank and file have begun building such a movement after the shock of Trump's victory. We need the likes of Indivisible even after we "win", and even if we "lose", because we have so much work in front of us.
