Dems gain seats in Florida, Virginia in fight for House majority

Democrats are off to a promising start in their bid to win back the House majority.

The party needs a net gain of 23 seats to win the majority, and it took its first one shortly before 8 p.m. when CNN and NBC both projected that Democrat Jennifer Wexton would defeat Rep. Barbara Comstock (R) in a critical race in the Washington suburbs.

Less than an hour later, Democrat Donna Shalala was projected to defeat Republican Elvira Salazar in a fight to win an open seat vacated by retiring Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R).

Both Shalala and Wexton were favored to win their races, as the two districts were both won by Hillary Clinton in 2016 over President Trump.
