The Democratic Party won at least 35 of the Senate's 63 seats as of late Tuesday night, wrestling control from Republicans who have led the chamber for much of the last century.
That majority appeared likely to grow further: At least six races were too close to call or awaiting results as of 11:30 p.m.
The big victory puts Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, in line to become the powerful Senate majority leader, who has a major role in crafting budgets and legislation each year at the Capitol.
With Gov. Andrew Cuomo winning re-election, Democrats will now control the executive chamber and both houses of the Legislature. The party has a wide majority in the 150-seat Assembly.

(129,053 posts)so the "super majority" has been broken.
Because our state legislative districts are still gerrymandered, it will take time to claw these seats back. But having Wolf in there now for the next 4 years, that will help when it comes to redistricting (which includes both federal and state) and forcing a better map. The last time after the 2010 election, Corbett was in there and the current travesty of legislative districts, came into being.
We could HOPEFULLY be able to use the same strategy of citing the State Constitution to fix the damn state seats (now having a (D) governor to shepherd that along when making this attempt) - and doing that might encourage the GOP to sign onto legislation to have a "fair districts" process.
