President Donald Trump today promised that his administration took election security seriously and accused the media of ignoring federal agencies efforts to protect the voting process from foreign interference.
Unlike the previous administration, we've done a lot of work on that issue, Trump told reporters when asked during a wide-ranging White House press conference whether he believed that foreign powers had interfered in Tuesdays midterm elections.
If you speak with the FBI, speak with the Department of Justice, speak to Homeland Security, we've spent a lot of time on election security, Trump said. But, he added, it gets very little coverage in the papers.
This is very important, and we have been working very hard on China and Russia and everybody else looking into our elections or meddling in our elections, Trump added. People tend not to write about it, but we have worked very hard.
News organizations have extensively covered the governments election security preparations for the midterms. Ahead of Tuesday's vote, administration officials held numerous briefings on the issue and news outlets covered those efforts as well as the work of the tech industry to combat disinformation ahead of the election.
