Lindsey Graham is eager to investigate DOJ, Hillary Clinton

By Steve Benen
As Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) gets ready to take the reins as chair the Senate Judiciary Committee, he spoke with Fox News Sean Hannity this week about his plans for the new year specifically as to the kind of issues Graham is prepared to investigate. From the Lexis-Nexis transcript:
Did the Department of Justice and the FBI use a document paid for by the Democratic Party? Research by foreign agents to get a warrant against an American citizen that was inappropriate, potentially unlawful? [ ]
We need a special counsel to look at all of this. But I intend to look at it. Im going to look at it. If you are going to keep plowing everything up in 2016, count me in. If you want to look for it, I will look for it.
To unpack this a bit, Graham is describing a handful of interconnected conspiracy theories, including his belief that the Justice Department overlooked Hillary Clintons crimes a rather ridiculous idea already discredited by the DOJs inspector general coupled with similarly odd ideas about the Steele dossier and surveillance of Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser.
Graham, evidently, is prepared to use the Senate Judiciary Committee to scrutinize all of this, for reasons that only appear to have merit with the most rabid of partisans.
But what struck me as especially notable about this was the way in which Graham presented this agenda as something of a threat.
Note, the GOP senator who seems to be enjoying his status as a partisan celebrity a bit too much didnt just talk about his Clinton-related conspiracy theories in their own right; he did so as a message to his Democratic friends.
If they want to look backwards which is to say, if theyre prepared to examine Russias attack on our election in order to help the Kremlins preferred candidate then Lindsey Graham will do the same. If those rascally Dems are going to keep plowing everything up, then the South Carolinian wants them to know hes prepared to scrutinize recent history, too.
The implication seems to be that if Democrats dont look backwards, and they dont investigate matters such as Putins efforts to put Trump in power, Lindsey Graham will be less eager to investigate Clinton-related conspiracy theories.
If you want to look for it, Graham said in his message to Democrats, referring to 2016, I will look for it.
The larger question is, why is the senator whos become one of Donald Trumps more sycophantic allies so worried about Democrats examining the Russia scandal?
* Update: This morning, Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) announced hes stepping down as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, clearing the way for Graham to claim the gavel. Ive updated the text of this piece to reflect the change.

(5,637 posts)of all the challenges facing this nation, this planet and the Congress, I'd say the top priorities should be Hillary Clinton's emails, and he should also have seven or eight hearings on the Benghazi incident. That's where I want my tax dollars spent.

(65,168 posts)Much of the public realized the tax cuts didn't help them much. Much of the public knows that the administration is nothing more than one stunt after another.
The tariffs are hurting some others, and the jobs promised are not going to materialize.
And it turns out, people like the ACA.
So, this nonsense is all they've got left.
And of course, Graham can do nothing but play to the base (which is eroding) and the big money masters.
Which is essentially because he's incompetent.

(6,496 posts)They already have done that plenty enough. What a supreme waste of time and money! It does nothing to move this country forward. Hillary is no longer an elected official and no longer works for the government at all. Move on already!
Investigating Trump is worthwhile because he actually is the current president right now. That's not looking backwards... that is dealing with the current state of affairs.

The Rethugs are deathly afraid of a Clinton Presidency and they will go to no end to bury these folks.

Emails? How ridiculously insignificant considering we have a russian family in the WH most assuredly passing Intel Briefing information to Saudi Arabia, The Soviet Union, (and, I KNOW it's Russia'r now. I remember most of my life w the Soviets, they were belligerent and sowed discord daily. And they put the eek in sneak'iness as far as attacking us. Let's face it. By the Mueller indictments and charges of Soviets already, why aren't we acknowledging it as an act of war? I don't want war, but, if the enemy is Russia, why are we depleting our military budget in Iraq and Afghanistan etc etc etc? Seems we need to rally to a new enemy. After all, if putin is going to colonize America, and has made significant inroads, _without the consent of 2/3rds of America-are we thinking of our Country FIRST, before ourselves? We have a duty to protect her from enemies foreign and domestic bc we also OWE it to future Americans to give them a better place. You know, than when we got it. As Americans it seems we could do far far better cogently and w forethought do much better protecting her. Just me though.
Repub. Americans(are they?) have taken this country for granted, the constitution et. al, aren't one way streets.....are we not called on to keep up our side of the bargain, should our way of life and system be threatened? We all pledge, and sing an anthem to the ideas of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and sing our creed.
Isn't there's a bold outline written there, describing some of our "duties" as citizens should tyranny etc threaten our country. Defense isn't fun or easy. We have become complacent in some ways imho. We need to start remembering what it took to defend this country in the past. Best option...stop wars before they are started. We need BETTER results from Homeland Security and Everyone on down. EVERYONE> 17+ intelligence services. What's up guys and gals? 17.....and this shit is slipping by? Once we're really war'ing in this country, it's too late.
We got such a reprieve from the elections. Let's PLEASE build on it and go with talent and experience until we get ourselves back to the Obama years? THEN, we can start nuancing our way of life again. This is no time for OJT in a speakership that is going to be in charge of so much.
The troops on the border need to surround the WH..they aren't dons troops, they are us...until we get this ALL straightened out. Selling out your country...is NOT an option. It's just non-negotiable. And someone ELSE can't sell it out for me either...bc they are sick, angry, or lazy... Sorry. we all hold title to America in fee simple absolute(?), sort of severally, and individually. Our American RIghts are inalienable in some regards. When we are being mindful, possibly contemplation of some of the above should be included. Have a good weekend everyone. Let's hope for best results, today, and going forward.

(7,543 posts)so the threat amounts to nothing more than harassment. They investigated this type of bogus shit for years and absolutely no one has been indicted. I say bring your best shot, asshat. Odds are Graham will ultimately be investigated for his own ties to Russian money laundering. With the Dems more or less maintaining their strength in the Senate when the odds were stacked against them with so many up for reelection, the Rs must be terrified of losing the Senate in 2020. If they do, it's all over for them...they're all going to jail.
