"You gotta take care of the floors. You know the floors of the forest, very important...I was with the President of Finland...he called it a forest nation and they spent a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things and they don't have any problem."

(31,261 posts)Create buffer zones around populated areas and make safe escape routes. That cuts the area down to maybe 1/20th. I hate to say it, but if executed properly, the concept can make a positive difference.

(13,571 posts)We are constantly told to leave our gardens and yards kinda mess with leaves and debris to help the birds and small critters.

(31,261 posts)To protect people and domesticated animals 1/100th to 1/1000th of all land would be affected. We should leave the "rugged individualist" types that refuse to live in or near civilization on their own.
But, you make a good point, if we allow forests to burn up to buffer zones, lots of wildlife will be sacrificed. Maybe the solution is a combination of buffer zones to partition forests where possible and controlled burns like someone indicated, that would save a lot more wildlife and also protect people and domesticated animals.

To the north is the Coast Highway which is surrounded by homes and businesses on both sides. You would have to throw people off their property to clear the land.
To the south is Los Angeles. There is no open space between the two cities. You cant tell you are leaving one and entering the other one.
To the East are the mountains and hillsides.
You clear those and you get mud slides.
Nope your idea would not have saved Malibu.

(31,261 posts)But in Northern California, such a plan would have likely saved lives.
I have done business in Southern California. You are right. I often saw canyons full of combustible vegetation and wildlife run right up to the yards of homes. People were ok with that, but they should be because there was nowhere else for the snakes and wildlife to live free if people.

(115,900 posts)(which has a very different climate from CA), and this year they did have a very big problem with fires, along with the rest of Scandinavia, because of a lack of rain and abnormally high summer temperatures - 10C warmer than usual.
I hope someone gets in touch with the president of Finland and asks him whether he ever discussed forest fires with Orangehole McLittleDick, and if so, whether he told him they rake their forests.
