For one thing, the case isn’t over yet. Avenatti may still be charged with misdemeanor domestic assault. But even if he isn’t, if Wohl’s objective was to destroy Avenatti’s reputation (and possible political future), you only have to look at the reaction here when the arrest was first announced to see that he was automatically presumed guilty and written-off. For most people, who aren’t as involved in politics, that will be their final impression, as they won’t follow the twists and turns the story took thereafter. And, even if they did, a significant number will remain convinced of his guilt, and write off the dropping of charges as “just another case of powerful men protecting other powerful men.” If the goal was to destroy Avenatti’s reputation, Wohl may have succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.
