...that's the sound that woke me up as dawn was breaking this morning, the noise coming from outside my back window.
Kerthunk, Kerthunk!
Trash collection, I thought... but no, it's Thanksgiving. Who collects trash on Thanksgiving?!
Got my clothes on, stuck my head out the back door. There on the ground by the house was an upturned flower bucket which was jumping and bumping into the others and disturbing our sleepy neighborhood.
Is it a squirrel, a cat? I had to know.
I went out and slowly lifted the plastic pot. Out hopped a large rabbit! The freed prisoner of mischief leapt into the yard, darting and zig-zagging away, much to the obvious surprise of a startled family of seven deer who had arrived the night before and were determined to spend Thanksgiving with us on the soft ground deliberately littered with leaves and pine needles.
They had been wondering along with me just who had been making all of the racket, and they looked up at me more with relief than alarm. Problem solved, they tucked their heads back down in anticipation of the warming sunrise, and I ducked back inside the warm house which was already stirring with the activities and aromas of this Thanksgiving morn.
This is refuge!
Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!

(46,166 posts)We have rabbits here, too. The other day hubby was up on a short ladder hanging a new light on the side of the garage. Two rabbits came to sit next to his ladder and watch him. They live under our storage shed and feed on the weeds in our pasture and no doubt the salad bar of old lilac bushes right out the "back door" of their burrow.
Our turkey is in the oven - Happy Thanksgiving with thanks for your lovely story!
...our bushes are their salad bar.
Happy Thanksgiving, eleny!

(7,630 posts)Up until last summer there was a large rabbit living in our yard for several years.
The town we live in is heavily wooded and a pair of foxes came late one summer night and killed the rabbit in the driveway.
I found what was left of the rabbit the next morning and buried it in the garden. I placed a rock in memory of the rabbit.
Never fear, there is also a small rabbit hanging out in the yard. I see him/her on occasion.
This morning, I found fresh rabbit prints in the snow, so I know that young doe/buck is still around.

(7,630 posts)The backyard is very popular with the wild rabbits and bees since it's pretty much all clover and no grass.

(7,630 posts)I'm a smoker so I go outside to smoke.
It was late one night (about 1AM) and I was on the front porch partaking in my dirty habit.
I kept hearing what sounded like someone walking through a pile of leaves. The problem was it was late July and there wasn't any leaves on the ground.
As I was on the porch, I hear more what sounded like someone walking through leaves. A fox came running from the right side of the house. It passed me and stopped in the driveway, which the driveway is on the left side of the house. It looked back at me and ran from the driveway and left in the opposite direction.
A few minutes later I hear a rabbit scream. I knew the sound because I've heard it before. It was dark and I was afraid to move. Another fox ran from the driveway and went in the same direction as the other fox had ran.
It seems that the foxes were circling the house and chasing the rabbit. I assume the rabbit left the backyard trying to run and got trapped in the driveway by a hungry fox.
The next morning I found bits of rabbit fur in the driveway, so I buried it.
