Pride. In memory of Harvey Milk.

(359 posts)Dianne Freinstein was a rock in a city that was first traumatized by Jonestown and then days later by these killings.
She was the leader who steeped forward and represented calm and reasoned sorrow in a very desperate moment.
I have the greatest respect for our Senator.

(81,527 posts)I was amazed watching how steady and composed she was while announcing the bad news to the public - on a horrific night in the Bay Area. She was head of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors at the time, if memory serves. Her strength, poise, and leadership really helped hold that city together in the midst of such a traumatic night.

(23,553 posts)One doesnt need to go back decades to see that shes now a good supporter of marriage equality and civil rights of gay and lesbian people. She opposed DOMA and has cast good votes.
That said, Diane Feinstein was not a leader of the struggle for gay rights back in the early 80s: https://www.nytimes.com/1982/12/10/us/partnership-law-vetoed-on-coast.html
Shes definitely a present day ally and thats great.

(23,553 posts)She was not a leader for gay rights at times back then. I focused on more recent times because I think its great that shes done so much good.

(4,919 posts)... It's an amazing documentary about Harvey Milk. A young Diane Feinstein delivers the emotional announcement about his murder.
The movie "The Times of Harvey Milk"... https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088275/

(5,257 posts)Harvey Milk's story is so sad. The movie with Sean Penn told the story very movingly, I thought.
DiFi is indeed a heroine. I've been glad to have her in the Senate.
Separation
(1,975 posts)There are those of us old enough to remember when this wasnt a Sean Penn movie and just life.
