sad news. the13 year girl that was abducted when the family's SUV was idling found dead

https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/27/us/north-carolina-missing-teen-search-body-found/index.html

A body found during a water search in North Carolina has been preliminarily identified as 13-year-old Hania Aguilar, Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeill said.

The final confirmation will be made using dental records, McNeill said.
The FBI announced on Tuesday that they had discovered a body following leads in Hania's disappearance.
The body was found off Wire Grass Road in Robeson County, McNeill said
Police say someone drove away with Hania in a relative's SUV that was parked in the driveway Monday morning before school, prompting authorities to issue an Amber Alert for her.
A witness saw a man dressed in black and wearing a yellow bandana force Hania into the vehicle. Authorities said they have no reason to think Hania knew her abductor and her family is cooperating with the investigation.
The stolen SUV was found abandoned less than 10 miles from Hania's home at the Rosewood Mobile Home Park, authorities said.

I'll never understand why people leave cars idling like that. Even here in California it happens a lot.

too

fwiw - what I know of lumberton (we were stuck there during a hurricane) - it's a lazy, small, town. I don't know about the crime rate, generally - but it seemed mostly agrarian.

The car was idling in the relatives driveway. There was no reason to expect something untoward would happen. I'd bet that relative has done it a millon times

She wasn't in a car. Apparently the man forced her into the car.

Exactly how long does it take to start the typical car? Three, maybe four seconds? And there's no need to have them idle to warm up, not in cars built since 1970 or so. Okay, maybe it's a bit more recent, but the vast majority of us are driving cars less than 15 years old, meaning they were built in the 21st century.

I've read of far too many cars being stolen when someone leaves them idling "for just a minute" while they run into a convenience store.

with the key in the ignition, this would not have happened.

I want to shout very loudly, DON'T LEAVE YOUR CAR IDLING. DON'T BE AN IDIOT! IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT, DON'T LEAVE THE CAR TURNED ON FOR ANYONE ELSE TO TAKE!!!

Does that make it clear? I am far too aware of times when someone has left a car idling and something terrible has happened, including a time when a baby was killed in the, I guess it should be called carjacking, incident. Jesus F Christ! What does it take to make people understand that you NEVER leave a car turned on with the key in the ignition. Never. Never. Never.

A side note. I drive a stick shift. It's what I prefer, what I've always driven, and I've decided that when I can no longer drive a stick, that will be a clear sign it's time for me to give up driving. I'm also 70 years old, which is a clue. Anyway, I've felt quite safe from carjacking for a long time now, since almost no one under the age of 50 or so has a clue how to drive a stick. Shall I add that I never use valet parking, because I absolutely will not trust my car to the kids? I also never leave my car idling, ever, while I run into a store. I turn it off. Take the key with me. That adds far less than thirty seconds to my time running in to get whatever I need. Dear lord, what do people need to know to make this clear?

People have been kidnapped without the cars left idling. Reportedly she was the one who started the car.
The guy then reportedly forced her into the car. We don't know if it was a crime of opportunity or pre-planned until/if police finds the perp.
