Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was sworn into Congress on Thursday but later, the New York Democrat was inducted into an even more exclusive body: the Breakfast Club.
Her initiation was prompted by Molly Ringwald, one of the stars of the 1980s movie bearing the organizations name, after a clip of a college-age Ocasio-Cortez mimicking an iconic scene went viral.
Ringwald, who played popular rich girl Claire Standish in the film about a mismatched motley group of high-schoolers who bond during weekend detention, tweeted late Thursday, replying to a thread juxtaposing the movies dance sequence with that of Ocasio-Cortez. Thats it, Alexandria youre in the club! she wrote, tagging co-star Ally Sheedy and adding the hashtags #AlexandriaOcasioCortez and #DemsTakeTheHouse.
Ringwalds invitation was quickly affirmed by Sheedy, whose arm-swirling, knee-crashing moves Ocasio-Cortez aped in the video clip. She responded with a high-five emoji.

Social media users were quick to drown the original right-wing Twitter account that shared the clip in sarcasm, as even stars commented on the dismal attempt at mudslinging.

A video of a Ocasio-Cortez dancing on a rooftop with college friends as the characters did in the '80s classic The Breakfast Club was posted Wednesday by a right-wing Twitter account (now disabled) trying to pawn the footage off as scandalous.
The footage did go viral because it was adored.
Even Breakfast Club star Molly Ringwald saw the video and responded.
"That's it, Alexandria you're in the club! @allysheedy1 #AlexandriaOcasioCortez #DemsTakeTheHouse," the actress said via Twitter.

(4,921 posts)and why the Republicans have to be humorless, life-hating jackasses about this.
But is there some reason why we need to dump on AOC here? She made a video in college. She was having fun. The actors of the movie that she was doing an homage to said they liked it. And the reply to that is "well, she's got a lot of hype to live up to." Fuck. Enjoy your life a little. It's Friday. There's a Democrat in congress that seems to like life, her job, and is willing to fight for things. That's a good thing.

(5,803 posts)She has barely stuck her foot in the door. Maybe she will live up to it, maybe she won't.

(3,813 posts)The Repubs tried their old, tired, pearl clutching nonsense, and it just does not play anymore.
The AOC video is a kid with her friends doing exactly what kids with friends should do: having fun, creating something together, and hurting no one.
Meanwhile, Repubs have given a pass to their own pussy-grabbers, rapists, pedophiles, and other truly awful individuals. The only thing that shocks me here is that after embracing Trump, Kavanaugh Roy Moore, and other monsters, Repubs would still try to trot-out that old Pat Boone / Jerry Falwell nonsense notions about propriety. It ain't working like it did in the 80's - hah!

(10,272 posts)Fuck all that noise, and let's just laugh at them. If they're NOT Snowflakes, they'll ignore us and keep on being themselves with no public fanfare, and let that speak for itself (as the liberal society-changers have always done).
My guess is, they'll cry and then melt.
