... Clay City's IGA has been turning away customers who want to pay with food stamps for a little over a week now.
But it's not a decision made by management.
Due to the government shut down, the IGA is unable to accept payment by EBT cards.
For two weeks federal workers have gone without pay, and in Clay City those who depend upon food stamps have gone without groceries ...

If this were a widespread problem, we'd be hearing much more about it. Especially on Twitter.
The store in Indiana, OTOH, probably has some technical glitch. Or maybe it also had to apply for new licensing for some reason. The management of that store could easily check with other stores to see if any of them are having the same problem they're having for weeks. But blaming the problem instead on the shutdown will help keep their customers who use EBT cards from going to stores that aren't having problems with them.
Whoever did the first stories on this should have been more responsible and checked with all stores in their areas that take EBT cards.

(1,002 posts)A single store in Indiana is having problems because the staff members on the Federal level have been furloughed before store management could get all its ducks in a row.
EBT recipients should be okay for the month of January. However, if the shutdown continues into February 38 MILLION Americans will face the prospect of going hungry. WE cannot allow this to happen to the most vulnerable members of society - low income seniors, children and the disabled.
If the Traitor currently occupying the White House actually managed to keep this shutdown going for months or even years as he claims, it will turn into a form of genocide - especially since ALL HUD low income housing assistance will vanish as well. Imagine being six years old with an empty stomach and thrown out with the rest of her family onto the streets. Imagine being a little old lady, hungry and suddenly homeless, wandering the mean streets of any American city in late winter.
I become extremely angry when I contemplate all this.

(35 posts)FWIW my EBT card worked at the supermarket today. It wasn't an IGA though.
