I keep coming back to a scene from a TV show of a few years ago...

One of my favorite shows, NCIS-LA had an interesting scene in the Season 7 opener. Backstory: Agent Callen is seeking info on a Russian friend who was left behind in Moscow at the end of Season 6. His search leads him to a Russian ex-pat living in SoCal with ties back to his home country, including with the Russian gangs, and he tries to arrange a deal to obtain info. As the end of negotiations near the end, the Russian says, "That's a great deal. It's not like I'm asking you to betray your country." Then he smiles rather coyly and adds, "Not yet, anyway."

That's how con men entrap people in their web, and Russian opertives know the tactic well. It's how Trump got looped in, though I doubt seriously that Trump has anything vaguely approaching any feeling of patriotism to the US. It's also how Ms Buttina ensnared so many old Repub guys who thought that a fling with a cute young Russian gal was just that, a harmless fling.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
