(32,645 posts)Serious question ... this Julia Davis is giving a translation of the Russian reporter's tweet. But the Russian reporter probably assumed that there aren't any journalists in the US that can read Russian, so this guy can tweet whatever he wants with impunity.
I have learned German and I can understand some "easy" German but I wouldn't know a word of Russian. Most American students used to take 2 years of a foreign language in high school, at least if they're planning to go to college. But I don't even know if that's a requirement any more, it may not be. The fact is that we're completely DUMB when it comes to foreign languages and it's well-known in the rest of the world. The educated people of other countries all have to learn English because we refuse to learn their languages. Also they get English on the internet and from our movies, tv shows and popular music.
The fact that Russian journalists can openly post damning comments about Trump (or anybody else) in their own language really makes me wonder how much is right out in the open, and we're missing most of it.

(32,645 posts)...but my point is, how many or how few, reporters can even speak a 2nd language?
This is a huge deficiency among American journalists. One of the reasons that I really like and trust Richard Engel (broadcast journo on NBC) is that he is fluent in Arabic. I don't know of any other in American news media who can say that. I'll assume that at least some of the writers and analysts must be fluent in other languages. But it doesn't seem like many can understand Russian.

(12,858 posts)Everyone knows no American can speak/understand a foreign language.
I was really shocked that Spanish language students in US who went to Spain or Central or So American countries were told that they could not have learned Spanish in US because 'everyone knows Americans can't speak a foreign language.'
