Hotel breakfast. Horrible I know. Anyway, three blue collar work guys at the next table. One of em said something about "Democrats don't get we need a wall" or something.
I kinda snickered and shook my head.
Guy 1: What? I guess you don't think we need a wall either.
And here is where the fun starts. Cue Glamrock. Long haired, blue collar white dude. Clad in denim top to bottom (i love my wrangler snap button western shirts). Complete with knife and scissor pouch hanging off belt to prove blue collar bonifides. Doing his best "conservative" impression. From here on, I'll post the gist of the conversation. I'd rather not discuss me telling them I fully support MAGA, etc......
Me: Listen. It'll sure help. I mean, sure. It's not really going to stop the drugs from coming in. Hell. President Trump (and that's when I had to swallow the vomit at the back of my throat. First time I ever said it). His very own DEA said most of the drugs come in by port.
Guy 2: Yeah but, I...
Me: Right!? I mean, sure. A fuckload are gonna go over. That's a given. And a metric fuck ton are going underneath. And a few will go through. All you need is fertilizer. Which is why it's going to cost billions of taxpayer dollars a year to maintain. Which is cool. President Trump (wretch again) said Mexico would pay for it. He didn't say Mexico would maintain it. We all knew it would cost tens and tens of billions to maintain right?
Group: Grumble, mutter, I, well, ya, know, never thought of that.... (Ooooo. A chink in the armor.)
Me: And we know most illegal immigration is people overstaying their visas, sure. But that's not the point. Right? It's about the symbolism. It's a message. Sure, the Democrats wanting to fund more port security would help with the drug problem. And funding more border security to hire more and build more outposts would be just as effective. But the symbolism is soooo important.
Group: (Confused, tentative agreement) Weellll. Yeah. But...
Me: But here's why I'm against it. If Mexico is paying for it? Cool. But if I gotta spend my tax dollars? I want what's cheapest and most effective. You can do a lot of security for 60 billion. And 5 to 10 bill a year, yeah?
Guy 2: Yeah but, it'll help.
Me: Of course it will. It'll keep out the laziest, ya know, which is good. But you are looking at this all wrong.
Guy 1: How so?
Me: We all know the media and the deep state and the Dems are working hard to bring him down. And it ain't looking good. There's criminal investigations into his charity, his business, his campaign, his inauguration committee, and his administration. It ain't looking good.
Group: yeah, not fair, Obama, grumble, mutter.
I'm now packing up my trash. Putting on my coat etc. But here's the best part.
Guy 3: But what does that have to do with the wall?
Me: What does a wall do?
Guy 1: It keeps people out! (With a look of pride reminiscent of the guy in Quest For The Holy Grail answering "no! Wood floats!)
Me: And?
Guy 3? Whadaya mean?
Me: Got a dog?
Guy 3: Yeah.
Me: Does your fence keep people out, or the dog in?
Guy 3: Well, both.
Me: Exactly! You think I want my tax dollars going to fence me in when President Chelsea Clinton gets her claws on Obama's FEMA camps? Better get on the horn to your people and tell em not to vote for it. I'm just saying. Well, have a good one fellas. Be safe.
I turned and walked out of the breakfast area to silence from the table. It was all I could do not to burst out laughing as the terrified, dawning horror on their faces hinted at the turmoil of the dueling conspiracies that was going on just under the surface.
I'm sure it did nothing to change their minds. As soon as they got in the truck and put on AM radio, they were reprogrammed. Sure was fun though!

(42,641 posts)One time, a few years ago, I went to my local Tea party meeting.
While they were talking about following the Constitution, I stood up and mentioned that the Constitution does not allow for a standing army.
I then suggested that the armed forces be abolished, except for the navy.
My suggestion was not treated well, and I was told that I would not be allowed in again.

(7,398 posts)long term maintenance costs eventually equal or dwarf initial construction. This is a typical Trump project. Initiate it, take credit for it, walk away and leave everyone else footing the bill. Your breakfast dolts probably never consider that.

That's a good play - fool them into thinking you're a Repug and then lead them on like lemmings.....just for play.....
Having worked around industrial construction for a long time, I got a giggle over the steel slat wall. A big boost for local economies on both side of the border for scrap metal yards! The damn thing would look like Swiss cheese in a few months.

(7,529 posts)The minute the wall is reframed as "Keeping Americans In" they gotta think.
"When Red Blooded 'Muricans (tm) want to cross the border, you want to climb a wall, or wait in a long line instead of hiring more security to man the lanes and get you drinking in Tijuana faster?"

(28,798 posts)never. while having dinner with a colleague in Baltimore around the first time trump was gassing people at the border a woman overheard a snippet of our conversation (not related to that or trump or anything close) and came up to our table, phone in hand, saying are you talking about that picture? she meant a picture that had gone viral of a little child being rushed away from the tear gas. "That was a set up! That was a set up!"
all I could think to say was they did gas immigrants at the border. then she started with some shit about coming in legally and my next retort was simply "This conversation is over."
My colleague was somewhat more gracious. I think i may have been tempted to slap her. But to be that quick witted? No, never, I only come up with what i SHOULD have said later.
Kudos

(8,419 posts)If you don't know the site it is a rw shithole where they alert/swarm anyone who isn't one of them.
I went there to check on what they were saying about the tRump/Russia situation, NOTHING. To be expected, it happened late on a Friday, noticed the same thing years ago at Hannity's site. The fucking mental midgets ignore anything that happens on late Friday until they get the talking points from Hannity, Limpballs, Coulter, etc.
Hey Discussionist lurkers
SWBTATTReg
(22,133 posts)want, and they won't change one vote or one thing. They seem to think that yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs means that their issues are more relevant and meaningful. They do have the right to express themselves as long as they respect ours, I'll give them that. And another funny thing...the same persons who designed DU also designed discussionist too (my understanding). Isn't that amazing?
Of course their heads are in the sand. Ignorance is the cred of rump, and these are exactly the voters that rump wants. Those that have seemingly no intelligence, think of nothing but themselves constantly (and no one else either (what a nice way to treat your friends and family, eh?)), and follow rump and his cronies
religiously, regardless if it means going over the cliff, and falling to your death. There is even an intelligence test for these rump supporters. If they can figure out one current rump administration official who is in rump's current administration 1 month from now, in the same job as they were when they started, then they are a winner!
What really gets me more than anything, is why are they listening to a so called billionaire and what he thinks? Why? And one that gets in bed w/ literally everyone! Russians, whores, etc. He has no religion to speak of, and goes through wives like water. He is not loyal to anyone and thus, no one is loyal to him. Why should them? Look at how he threw his own personal attorney under the bus after what, 15 years or more? He can't even hire anymore attorneys, none of them want to work for him. Look at all of the contractors he's ripped off in the past. Probably do more of the same now. Ask his daughter what happened to the 45 million dollars that the campaign raised (but didn't spend on campaign related items)? Ripped everyone off, eh?
Take care rufus dog.

(779 posts)I pointed this out to a Trumper coworker, and I think it might be the only thing that gave him slight pause. I compared it to the Berlin Wall, and he said yes, but that wall was meant to keep the East Germans from leaving. I said yes, but the East Germans were told that it was to keep the Westerners out. I was not just saying this to fuck with him, either. "Hmm, that's something to think about," he replied, and I could see the gears turning. I think it should be a real concern for all Americans, and it should be something we bring up in conversations with Trumpers.
