Analyst says Trump's base will support him if he backs off wall funding demand

Public opinion analyst Karlyn Bowman predicted Friday that President Trump's base would continue to support him if he struck a deal with Democrats to reopen the federal government that did not include his requested $5 billion in funding for a border wall.

"The White House is interpreting it as a very important thing for its base, and you certainly see that in terms of the commentators, supporters of the base [who] have been talking about these things for a long time," Bowman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, told Hill.TV's Jamal Simmons on "What America's Thinking."

"But I think they will support him even if he doesn't get the wall," she continued. "Your base is people who are with you when you're wrong, when you're right – they're with you all of the time."

The government shutdown entered its 21st day on Friday, which marked the first paycheck missed by federal employees impacted by the shutdown.

But everyone else will be even more angry.

One thing I've never understood. Most politicians once elected try to expand their outreach. Trump only seems to care about the minority who elected him.

They're not going to save his ass.

He f Ed up and felt like he couldn't back down. This might give him some relief.

And claims he feels too many people are being hurt by the obstructionist Dems, he could appear to be gracefully bowing out. Nancy won't really let him get away with it, but it would let him pretend to save face and still allow his worshipers to believe in him.
And we could forget the damn wall at last

Isn’t it obvious that his plan is, essentially, hostage-taking? He’s going to keep the shutdown going until public opinion turns to “we can’t take it any more — give the crazy man his wall so we can get back to normal.” If we don’t, then the public will start blaming us for the shutdown. And, if we do give in, the narrative will shift to “Trump wins as Dems cave again.”
