"Unbelievable!"
This seems to be the Republican reaction to the latest bombshell in the NYTimes.
They were investigating him as a possible asset of the Russian government.
Why? Was it on a whim?
Or was it because they were not sure that Donald Trump had the best interests of our nation at heart?
There was a lot of unexplainable activity with the Russians and they all lied about it?
And there was Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, attempting to set up a secure channel of communication between Russia and the White House without the knowledge of any American intelligence agencies. Not to mention the secret meeting with the Russian oligarch in the Seychelles, led by Erik Prince, brother to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
Not to mention the way Trump was helping Putin by tearing down our allies, especially in the NATO Alliance. And the manner in which he was willing to tear down our own government in defending Vladimir Putin.
What was the FBI supposed to do? Ignore it?
How do the Republicans explain this?

(31,011 posts)There are lawyers and judges involved that have to give the go ahead for something like this. They had convincing enough evidence to instigate it.
After hearing this news and watching Active Measures, I'm convinced that tRump agreed to whatever Putin wanted in exchanged for bailing him out of his financial dire straits.

The answer (an of-course to me) is that to do their duty would have been to cede political control of the nation to the Democratic Party. So they did not. They betrayed their nation instead.
Just one little example: NYT claimed they were asked to rewrite a VERY different story that lied and protected Trump and the Republican Party by "the authorities," presumably the FBI. And the NYT complied, merely a continuance of their systematic campaign to defeat the Democratic Party.

Pissant Russia merely helps their efforts along. As do our own anti-Democratic Party leftists, declared Democrat or independent/nonaligned makes no difference.

(58,785 posts)A big question, among many, is whether he just woke up one morning and decided for fun to see if he could get away with further, but increasingly blatant betrayal, of his duties. Maybe the prospect of several more years as Director of the FBI bored him?
OR, whether he was conspiring with and pushed into committing career suicide by others who had become increasingly desperate at the prospect of losing national power to the Democrats.
Same for his deputy, McCabe.
Trump, kissing Comey on the check at the inauguration party.
Lots of people forget about this moment.

(11,885 posts)Dismisses it with claiming its all lies, and others are always criminals, and liars, then if that doesn't take hold he then suggests made up crimes, then starts using that he's a victim, and when that doesn't work enough he suggests it wasn't illegal and was really something good he did on behalf of the country.

(9,765 posts)for quite a while. I can bet he has had a folder on him for a while. Then it probably didnt take much to get started after all his Russian talk during the campaign and after the election. It was not on a whim this had to be played out with much hand wringing and a boatload of lawyers. He was tainted years ago and they knew it but it didnt matter much back then he was just another blowhard rich guy trying to get attention.

(10,252 posts)More than a few Republicans knew damn well that Russian money was coming in. In addition, like Trump, they are so habitually engaged in greed and self-cherishing that they cannot admit that they made a mistake. Money and power, by any means, is all they care about. They have no honor, no virtue.

(2,187 posts)I dont know about you all, but alot of my stress was worry that nobody was doing anything about Spankys treasonous behaviour. Now that I know that the FBI did indeed open an investigation after Spanky asked Russia for help out loud and in public, I'm so much more relaxed . Wish they'd told us sooner! Now I can sit back, get my popcorn out and enjoy the show.
