I don't get it. Can someone talk me down?
Update: The phrase in question was said, not by CT but by one of his guests, Rebub. Cardenas. And it was said about the Mueller investigation not the FBI. Later transcript reveals my folly.

Nailed it.

(94,740 posts)There's a major distinction between colluding with the Russians and working for them. And this investigation was back in 2016; if there had been heard evidence, wouldn't they have brought it forward?

(3,344 posts)We have no idea what happened to the investigation. It may have gone to Mueller. Since there is no report, then the claim can't be true. What a ridiculous thing to say.

Because it is a safe bet the only people who know what the SC staff are the SC staff, and they aren't going to let something slip to Chuck Todd...

(32,773 posts)Chuck Todd has to book people on Meet the Press - that's his main gig on NBC. The rightwingers won't come on his show if they believe he's going to sandbag them or start ragging on Trump, McConnell and the rest of the GOP. I believe he has to walk a fine line to keep those rightwingers coming on his show.
Also, his boss Andrew Lack probably made him say that. I'm not kidding. They can't make Rachel or Lawrence say crap like that, but Todd gets jerked around a lot.

Hopefully he mis-spoke. He will be on the wrong side of history on this. However, it does shed light on the few media news shows that start, and give wayyy too much time to 'what about ism', 'both sides do it', and smugly conjecturizing defenses for the gop everyday on their shows. CT has been particularly aggregious of never failing to suggest, a possible innocent answer for some bad gop behavior. All in the name of "fairness and debate". in my humble estimation. Just speaking generally on a routine week for him. Not today.
Hopefully he's tired. I miss Tim Russert.

You'd say, "That's a little over the top." My only thought, coming out of this, beyond astonishment, is the thought that, you know, "Congress must know something about this." Because indeed, they probably have been dealing with the F.B.I. on this. They knew a few things. I also think, "My goodness, this Mueller report, if this is what we're talking about, could we please get it out there quickly?"
CHUCK TODD:
Yeah. It's funny. It's like, we're sitting in the shutdown, Cornell. And you have this out there. It does color everything that were -- thats facing us right now.
CORNELL BELCHER:
Well, you know, I think two things. One is, I want to underline, sort of, the -- all the people around the Trump campaign involvement, sort of, touching base with Russians. Because, you know, we learned that they passed polling information on to the Russians, Chuck. As a campaign pollster, our polls and our campaigns are sort of what you see, you know, a horse shot. You know the horse race. It is strategic, right? What we're doing, in these polls, we are outlining strategy and decisions and where you should target. And for a campaign to be giving it to the Russians, how is that not collusion, right? I don't know if it's collusion in a court. But certainly, in the public opinion, it has to be. I think it smells like a duck, sounds like a duck, walks like a duck. It is, in fact, a duck. It's hard for you to say, that's not collusion.
AL CARDENAS:
I'll say this. The other side of the situation here is, for some reason, the Mueller investigation clears President Trump. I mean, that's a death blow to a lot of Democrats hopes, as well.
CHUCK TODD:
Yeah, that's a fair point.
CAROL LEE:
And the White House is preparing. You know, they're ready for, basically, a street fight over this. I mean, they're saying that they're going to exert executive privilege and say that they want to see the report. They're going to try to block certain parts of the report.
Miles Archer
(18,837 posts)Since we honestly have no idea how Mueller will conclude, we don't know how damning it will be. I seriously doubt that Trump will be "cleared." It may exceed expectations, it may disappoint on some level, it could be anywhere in between. So the statement is more of a "Let's play devil's advocate" remark than an exoneration of Trump. No one said that.

(12,169 posts)yes, its a hell of a different meaning!

He left out the key word if. Since the Mueller report hasnt come out yet, clearly he means ...if for some reason, the Mueller investigation clears President Trump....
Not sure if thats what everybodys talking about, but I havent yet seen a quote showing that Chuck Todd stated that the FBI or Mueller investigations cleared Trump.

(34,184 posts)...we should be prepared there may not be enough on Trump directly.
Mueller appears to be a careful, fastidious, and conservative investigator. He won't hype anything.
If its there, its there, but if Mueller says it is not, then I'll believe him.
This is why I support Pelosi's strategy of waiting for the Mueller investigation to conclude before pulling the impeachment trigger.

(776 posts)I watched last night. Had no transcript in front of me or no recording of the show to check out. I heard those words on the fly and they triggered me-- as the transcript shows someone, Cardenas actually said it. It came and went fast. And I didn't remember who exactly said it. So sue me.
I hold CT responsible for his guests, to some degree. And there are lots of people out there who believe what was said.
