Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWho would you like to see on the ticket come 2020 and why? Did I miss anyone?
For me, and in rank order:
Elizabeth Warren - Strong Message, strong organization
Amy Klobuchar - Well rounded, weak organization
Julian Castro - I like both him and his brother, dynamic. Is their org any good?
Bernie Sanders - Strong organization, consistent message, too old
Eric Swalwell - I'm really enjoying this guy, I doubt he has the organization to do it. Great VP pick
Kamala D. Harris - Potentially strong message AND machine, but she missed a step and Warren got the drop on her
Cory Booker - I've always liked his passion, but there is the potential for "Me Too" scandal there
Joe Biden - Im really like him, but I think we are still in a change mood as a nation, also old
Sherrod Brown - My senator. Great guy. No chance. Too Establishment for a change year
Beto ORourke - Too young, needs more experience. Great VP pick.
Hillary Clinton - They have her number, she carries baggage, both earned and otherwise, sadness all around
Michael Bloomberg - Too establishment for me
Terry McAuliffe - seems like a solid machine politician
John Delaney - That guy who is gonna lose but still shows up to make the effort. Too establishment for the nation's mood
Tulsi Gabbard - Charismatic kook
Kirsten Gillibrand - I dont think America recognizes how far we still have to go, and I think maybe the Al Franken issue is just right at
that fulcrum of our own uncertainty, because he was so well liked, she said.
Michael Avenatti - I'd rather chew glass
Deval Patrick - Dropped out

(4,492 posts)As for Sherrod Brown-- I worry that if he is elected, then his seat in the senate is lost for at least a decade. Can we afford to give up his seat?

(3,032 posts)I love the dynamics of both him and his brother. Do they have a good organization. I plugged him in above Bernie.

(3,032 posts)I do not want to lose him, but I feel like he is too establishment for the mood right now anyhow.

(17,240 posts)i don't feel he has a good reason to be an independent.
if he "turns" into a democrat, just so he can run under our mantle.... he isn't a democrat. he is an opportunist.

(3,328 posts)Not that I want these guys, but they will be the mix. Most likely for VP and cabinet considerations.
Mine: Biden/Harris or Harris/Beto or Harris/Warren (in that order) I would like Biden/Beto but concede too white and too male.

(8,362 posts)Montana Sen. Jon Tester won his third term in the Senate. He was one of the few Democrats in a red state to survive a reelection bid this cycle and speaks with NPR's Ari Shapiro about how he did it....
Of all the Senate races in the 2018 midterms, Montana was one of the most personal to President Trump. The incumbent Democrat there, Jon Tester, helped bring down President Trump's choice for VA secretary, Ronny Jackson. In the five months leading up to Election Day, President Trump visited Montana four times to campaign against Tester....

(1,969 posts)Good legislative experience in Washington state legislature and congress, and a popular 2-term governor. Smart, personable, knows how to get things done, and is a good Democrat.

(9,696 posts)Looking forward to hearing more from him.
I wouldn't write off Kamala Harris to soon. She's got charima, energy and smarts. She would make a great Atty General, which is ok, California has a deep bench.

(812 posts)Brown wins Ohio and gets all the blue collar whites.
Beto gets all the millennials and Hispanics.
Both get traditional democrats, mainstream democrats, independents, LGBTQ and POC.
Beto may even give us Texas.
First Speaker
(4,858 posts)...he probably won't run--but he should. Smart, articulate, and he really gives a damn about people. I know several people--including me--who he's really helped, when no one else would. He would make a great President.

(11,949 posts)Assuming he won re-election which he did.
And I disagree with your assumption that he has no chance in a change year. Americans are craving a return to normal.
I dont like Sherrods trade policies. But if he gets the nomination he wins.
The worst thing we can do is nominate a progressive supporting unproven policies. We may well lose that match up.
Brown/Harris or Booker would win in a landslide.

(3,032 posts)She doesn't qualify until 2024 I think.
If you don't think a nearly 80-year-old candidate will not be an issue, then you didn't pay attention to the last campaign. Health will be a big part of it again. If we run an old candidate, then we let 74-year-old Donald off the hook.
Also, older means more baggage and old ideas. With Biden, we'll get to relive his handling of testimony around Clarence Thomas in the "Me Too" context. Hint: It ain't pretty.
Sanders is a one-note piano idea-wise. Played on an off-key toy piano from 1968 last tuned in the 20th century.

(3,784 posts)Anybody who thinks Sherrod Brown can't win has never seen him in action. At one time, he was about the only Democratic Senator in Washington who was willing to "drop the gloves" and slug it out with Republicans. Plus, he's authentic, which is why he's the hero of the blue collar workers in Ohio. People are attracted to authenticity. He comes from the same small Ohio manufacturing town that I come from, and his mom worked in the public schools with my dad. He's not some rich kid who decided to buy his way into politics with a "small million-dollar loan" from daddy. He wins in blue collar Ohio because his message resonates with working class voters. And because he's not a phony (people can spot a phony a mile away).
And I love Beto because he's got that special something that appeals to a wide array of voters. A diverse cross-section of the country can identify with him. It's something that Bill Clinton had. Just a likeability that people are drawn to. I also think he ticks all the boxes that Sherrod Brown doesn't. His lack of experience does worry me a little bit, but I think people will be more attracted to his personality than repelled by his lack of experience.
Warren or Castro or Sanders or O'Rourke or Biden and damnit, HILLARY needs to be the freaking President! I'd vote for any of them.

(12,344 posts)He's not well known enough to be really establishment. He's unashamedly progressive and has an opportunity to define himself. Also, as mentioned upthread, he is real, unscripted.

(22,758 posts)here is disturbing... lots of older politicians are really bad... but it is not because they are old... it is just because they are bad...
many 70, 80, 90 year olds are wise and adept... I would suggest we assess people on their abilities and actions/talk... not on their age

(6,139 posts)trump cant effectively campaign against him as they have shared base in midwest. Id vote for him in the primary cause I dont want to take any risks. Warren has a good start. Harris is behind but would potentially cause more excitement and enthusiasm than anyone else; her approach to campaigning is more positive in comparison to Warren. Biden is a gamble, IMO. If he wins primary, I would be very concerned in the general election because I cant find any difference between his views and Clinton. The media is not gonna be interested in Biden one bit so hell lose the coverage. We are still assuming that we are running against trump but anything can happen now and we may find ourselves fighting against somebody like Haley, Romney, Kasich, etc. or even Pence.
