Passenger gets gun past Atlanta airport screeners, flies with it to Tokyo
Updated on: January 14, 2019 / 8:07 AM / CBS News
A passenger managed to slip a gun past screeners at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and fly with it all the way to Tokyo, federal officials confirmed to CBS News. He alerted Delta Air Lines workers when the plane got to its destination, the carrier confirmed.
The story was first reported by WSB-TV in Atlanta.
The Transportation Security Administration told CBS News, "TSA has determined standard procedures were not followed and a passenger did in fact pass through a standard screening TSA checkpoint with a firearm at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on January 2. TSA will hold those responsible appropriately accountable

(6,390 posts)From what I read, the headline should be "TSA fails to identify gun in a passenger's carry-on..."
IIRC, TSA collects thousands of guns annually from people who 1) either just didn't know better (It's possible) or 2) forgot they had the damned thing in their suitcase/briefcase/backpack/whatever. It's not thousands of guns from people intent on doing harm trying to "sneak one past" TSA.
This headline reframes the issue inaccurately by implying that this passenger was successful in his/her goal of slipping a gun onto a flight.
Not buying it. The shutdown is having an adverse impact on flight safety.
Period. End of sentence. New paragraph.

(13,580 posts)It's that somebody with a gun got through screening.
Is this a result of the shutdown? Maybe it would have happened anyway? Hard to say.
I think we're going to start hearing more of these stories.

(146,333 posts)I forgot to put it in my checked bag, and it went through the security screening in my jacket pocket with my keys. It wasn't noticed.
I was distracted, due to the reason for my trip and didn't even notice, until I moved stuff back to my pockets after the screening. On the return trip it was in my checked bag, as it usually is.
Screening stations are understaffed right now. Mistakes are being made. I should have had to surrender that knife, a three-bladed Old Timer stockman's knife at the screening. Oh, well. At least I don't have to replace it with one of the two others I have in case I lose one.

(4,448 posts)When tested, TSA has a failure rate of about 95% to detect guns and knives, and explosives.
The only thing they are VERY good at doing is detecting bottles of water and protecting the profits of airport vendors.
