Horrifying Moment: Squeal Like a Pig
WARNING: the above scene contains some nudity. This movie will forever be remembered for two scenes. First, the inbred boy who is a master of the banjo duels with one of the city boys. The other scene is later, after the city boys have canoed down the river. Two mountainmen ambush two of them, Ned Beatty and Jon Voight, and force Voight at gunpoint to watch as one of them, Bill McKinney in real life, tells Ned Beatty he looks just like a hawg, then rapes him while forcing him to squeal like a pig. It is absolutely horrifying. The sound of his voice squealing like a pig, and then Beatty moaning as the sodomy begins. The other mountainman is played by Herbert Coward, who then tries to force Voight into performing fellatio, saying, He got a real purty mouth, aint he?
Burt Reynolds shows up and shoots McKinney through the back with a bow and arrow. Cowards character escapes for the time being. When John Boorman told Coward he would be raping someone in the film, he said, Ive done worse.
This scene has been parodied, remade, ripped off and talked about ever since 1972 when it hit theaters. Youll be hard pressed to find a more disgusting, repugnant, realistic or appalling moment of pure terror in the history of film.
Burt Reynolds Says 'Deliverance' Rape Scene Was Too Graphic: http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2008/01/21/burt_reynolds_says_deliverance_rape_scen
Hollywood star Burt Reynolds has confessed the infamous scene in Deliverance in which co-star Ned Beatty is raped by a hillbilly was excessively graphic.
The veteran actor has revealed how the brutal scene could have delved further into explicit detail had he not stopped the filming, according to New York gossip column PageSix.
He says, "All that 'squeal, piggy, piggy' was not in the script. Two camera operators looked away during the scene because it was getting so hairy. Finally, it went too far and I ran into the shot. I asked John Boorman, the director, 'Why did you let it go that long?' He said, 'I wanted to take it as far as I could with the audience, and I figured you'd run in when it got too far.'"

.
There are many MUCH more graphic depictions of rape in so many movies... what makes this one so special?

(99,660 posts)2. Think of it as being 1972 when it was released, not todays standards
And it got MEN to thinking "that could be me" that never thought about it before.

(115,103 posts)3. Last House on the Left was around that time.
It turns my stomach thinking of all the extended, brutal, extremely graphic rape scenes showing women... Yet these two writers described this very tame scene as being so singularly, exceptionally horrible.
