In the initial media churn, they were nearly missed.
But a small band of Hebrew Israelites, members of a historic but little-known American religious movement, may actually be at the center of a roiling controversy that has gripped the nation in recent days.
-snip-
They are members of The House of Israel, which draws from what scholars call Black Israelism, a complex American religious movement that can be dated to the 18th century, at least. Beliefs vary widely, but groups are bound together by the central tenet that African Americans are the literal descendants of the Israelites of the Bible and have been severed from their true heritage. A related belief holds that white people are Edomites, the genealogical descendants of Esau the twin of Jacob.
Several distinct denominations or traditions have emerged over the years. Congregations and leaders differ widely, making neat generalizations tricky. Some read the Christian Bible and believe that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah; others read only the Hebrew Bible. Some have moved into tentative dialogue and collaboration with wider American Jewish organizations. Others have not.
The 1970s and 80s saw the rise of an innovative new branch of Black Israelism centered around an organization named the Israeli Tanack School, known colloquially as One West, after its address on 125th Street in Harlem.

Ive heard them spew some of the vilest homophobic trash. Definitely giving the Phelps clan a run for their money.
Just as bad is the abuse they hurl at interracial couples, especially black women with white men.

Everyone else managed to walk away from them. Covington Hitler Youth says they had to surround and torment Mr. Phillips because those 5 guys were being mean to them.

They need to be held accountable for these actions.

(7,638 posts)Spewing hateful shit is protctected from singing in the bathroom to shouting racists words in the national cathedral. How do you intend to hold them accountable? It's the only group you seemed concerned over. Why is that? Is there something about this group that sets you off? Please do tell because most of us know already. Your transparency is shallow.
Covington hitler youth went there with the intention to harass people.

Guaranteed that had it been 5 white bigots vs 40 black high schoolers, DUers wouldnt have been nearly as dismissive of that crew.

Your point does not fall of deaf ears. I agree with your sentiment. They are being used as justification for the actions of others. One of the most insidious forms of justification.

(82,383 posts)I heard them yelling at them as Catholics for worshipping Mary when they should be worshipping the Lord. They were reading from the Bible themselves; ranting on about the wicked not going unpunished and that Jesus was a man of color and not a white man, that their white looking Jesus is false. And the rest of us all are wicked. Ironically they could actually agree on some issues. They were condemning people for being gay and though they said nothing about abortion that I heard, they were there at the march.

And I heard that Edomite descendants are actually today's Russians....yeah, whatever. How many "lost tribes" religions are there now? If we want to get technical, Palestinians probably have more "Jewish" ancestry than most.
But I don't subscribe to being Jewish means you are a race. Its a religion, period. The wife of Moses wasn't Jewish, David's other wife was a Hittite, Herod was actually an Edomite, in Joshua's conquest Canaan, they took the women and children as their own. The belief to marry within ones tribe was one of inheritance issues, in which case, someone from the tribe of Simon should not marry someone from the tribe of Reuben. The practice was reintroduced as form of persecution.
