Did you know that Michael Bennet struggled with dyslexia as a child? He worked very hard, and he overcame it in the end. And finally he graduated from law school! And he has done very well ever since.

We need more Dems to speak out like this.

It looked like it was extemporaneous, too. A rare and beautiful sight to behold, these days.

He rarely speaks. He's the guy who isn't looking for political theater. Instead he takes his job seriously, tries to work with his GOP Colleagues to find common ground and/or acceptable compromises and sees his job to be to represent his constituents.

I think he surprised the Hell out of the Senators in the chamber (since he rarely makes speeches) and he fried Cruz! And, he did it all without a microphone. Evidently each Senate desk is equipped with a mic the size of a fountain pen that Senators typically grab and hook into their breast pocket when they get up to speak. Sen. Bennet didn't use a mic he just reared back and let ol' Lyin Ted have it with both barrels.

It was a thing of beauty and a glorious sight to see.

Or at least to our imaginary 'back in the day' Senate where our elected officials took to the floor and spoke from the heart, spoke with a sense of urgency and passion, took no prisoners.

We need more of this. These people work for us, not the other way around. Bennet reminded people (Cruz specifically) of that and he did it splendidly.

Kudos!

Fri Jan 25, 2019, 01:06 PM
Jan 2019

The Colorado"DINO" Bennet is running scared, just like every single one of the other Senators that voted with the Democrats against Trump.
These six senators ALL know they are totally screwed in the 2020 election if they don't do an about face on the way they have been voting, and pretend (once) again to be in favor of the people and then revert back to voting Republican after they are re-elected. At the very best, Bennet is a "Blue Dog"....................

Michael Bennet (D -Colorado) was re-elected in 2016 and is not up for re-election until 2022. Think you may have confused the 2 - Michael Bennet votes consistently Democratic and I wouldn't really call him a "Blue Dog" Dem. GARDNER is the one who knows he's screwed in 2020 and is making a desperate attempt to try and save his "job".

and you are absolutely correct about the state of our two Senators. Right after 2016 Gardner, a Kavanaugh-supporting, Trump-humping, evangelical asshole began voting with Dems occasionally because he knows his ass is gone in 2020.

Bennet, who was--as you wrote--re-elected in 2016, gave a GREAT speech. I will not take that away from him. (Though he is not the most eloquent of speakers.) But he has always been too corporatist for me. I think your description of him as a "Blue Dog" is spot on.

As angry as Sen. Bennet's speech is, it's also elegant in the way it connects Republican behavior to public cynicism about politics and the loss of American influence.
