The official platform language poised for approval at next week's Republican National Convention doesn't fully represent the party's presumptive presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said Tuesday.
Republicans are gathered this week in Tampa to draft official platform language, and potential language calling for the adoption of a constitutional amendment to curb abortion rights has drawn newfound scrutiny.
The RNC's platform committee is set to vote Tuesday evening on draft language related to abortion, which calls for "a human life amendment to the Constitution," along with "legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children."
"I think as far as the details of some of these things, like an exception for rape or life of the mother, these are not uncommon differences that candidates have and don't share some of the detail on some of those exceptions," Priebus said on MSNBC. "This is the platform of the Republican Party; it's not the platform of Mitt Romney."
The party adopted identical language in its 2004 and 2008 platforms, which doesn't talk about exceptions or granular details, but also doesn't specifically stipulate an exception to bans on abortion in cases of rape, incest, or the health of the mother.

What is so goddam hard to understand about "born or naturalized." You have to be BORN to be covered by the Amendment; similarly one would have to be BORN to become a naturalized citizen.

Who the hell IS Mitt?? He's a shape shifter.. they're trying to mold him weekly according to polling. If your fucking NOMINEE doesn't embody your platform, then someone is lying.. somewhere. So they're asking their voters to vote for a guy that does NOT support their platform? Who would those voters be getting? A former pro-choice moderate republican turned staunch pro lifer and right wing mouthpiece (thanks to a several hundred million dollars from the Koch bros. and Adelman?) who has paired with a Tea Party darling who pretends to be a policy wonk and the second coming of Opie Taylor?
The GOP Is all sorts of messed up.

All of them are to a degree, but these guys are just brazen about it. Hell, Romney even sold his VP pick for $100M.

(94,598 posts)....Mitt Romney, who controls all aspects of the Republican Convention is either 1) too scare to assert his own policy positions on other Party members, or 2) completely disdainful of the Party faithful by allowing them to waste their time on a Platform he won't give a moments attention to.

Romney has never come out with any ideas that stick. That "wall" must be so covered from throwing ideas that there is no space for more. It's piling up deep, as we speak. Ryan says something and then changes his tune after Romney and Ann hear what he's up to. I can honestly say, I have no clue what the Repug team is running on. They've wasted all this time, money and energy lying about Obama...even when faced with the truth. It is totally incredible.
Maybe the campaign is just something to fill the time until the election, as they plan on rigging the machines to win in the end. With all that cash, they should be able to figure that out.
I can hardly wait until the first day of the convention. Popcorn bags are lined up on the counter and I'm not even going to waste time on bowls. Redenbacher and I are going to be constant companions. I just have to remember that I can't catch popcorn in the air and laugh at the same time.

There have been other empty figureheads in history given the top spot and controlled by others. It could be argued that Bush was a figurehead for most of his 2 terms, if not all. But it is not usually so open that the person they want to elect is nothing more than an empty mask for another face and a glove on another man's hand.
