(12,679 posts)We're 35 days shut down - in the middle of a cold winter, after the holiday employment boom, and before the spring hiring season for construction and other seasonal part-time and full time employment prospects - that typically shut down over the winter.
This is not the time one can quickly find a part-time job to help cover the bills.
Evictions (or eviction notices), rationing of expensive and dosage-critical medication, weakened immune systems due to slow starvation, inability to afford transportation to get to a doctor or to get medicine and groceries, hypothermia due to a cut-off, or cutting down on utilities in the middle of a f'n cold winter...
A sudden loss of income is often the cause of an increase in suicide, domestic violence, and murder-suicide.
Saw it during the recession. Basic standard of living drops suddenly and drastically, and most Americans are physically and mentally not capable of adapting quickly enough to a suddenly changed environment. There was no "thirty day grace period" or understanding that the job was going to end after a specified period that a federal contractor or employee could prepare for, it was "Merry Christmas - oh, by the way, we're shutting it all down because Boss Man got scared of some uppity new people that don't worship him and is throwing a tantrum."
Job losses and evictions drove people crazy. Some people were so wrapped up in their work, they will take their families out with them if they feel they can't "provide" for them.
