Akin Clarifies ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comments: Women Make ‘False Claims’ About Being Raped

Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) announced that he will continue with his race for the U.S. Senate, during an appearance on the Mike Huckabee radio show Tuesday afternoon, and clarified his claims that women who face “legitimate rape” cannot become pregnant.

Arguing that he misplaced the word “legitimate,” Akin explained — during a follow up interview with Dana Loesch — that he meant to argue that women sometimes lie about being raped:

AKIN: You know, Dr. Willkie has just released a statement and part of his letter, I think he just stated it very clearly. He said, of course Akin never used the word legitimate to refer to the rapist, but to false claims like those made in Roe v. Wade and I think that simplifies it….. There isn’t any legitimate rapist…. [I was] making the point that there were people who use false claims, like those that basically created Roe v. Wade.

Thank you Mr. Akin!

sometimes lie about being raped. However, that's not what created Roe v. Wade. He ought to read up on the case.

But that has NOTHING to do with the idea that women should be able to control their own bodies.

FBI reports consistently put the number of "unfounded" rape accusations around 8%.[8] However, "unfounded" is not synonymous with "false" allegation.[9] The largest study, published in 2005, was based on 2,643 sexual assault cases and found 3% of false reports.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics#False_reporting

NOTE: This wiki page also mentions a very criticized report that said 41 percent of rape claims were false; however, the sample was VERY small and links to substantial complaints of said report.

of rape claims may be false or unfounded. They do sometimes occur, but that is no reason to deny women control over their bodies.

It bothers me a LOT that sometimes a woman will lie about it. I don't know if I just want to shrug and say to myself, "Oh well, some people are just pathological liars" or think something else.

I also think that the percentage of women who have actually been raped is very high. Sometimes a guy just doesn't want to take No for an answer, and so it's easier to go along. It's still nonconsensual sex, meaning rape.

I guess we can conclude that according to him, a woman who says she became pregnant from rape wasn't "legitimately raped' since her body didn't shut all that thing down.
He should just keep on talking.

there are women who lie about rape. That is undeniable.

However that had nothing to do with Roe v Wade and doesn't make any sense when paired with his first statement.

15. Women lying about rape is the reason abortion is illegal in cases of rape
Tue Aug 21, 2012, 02:41 PM

Here's the issue.

Women who want abortions are desperate. Often desperate enough to harm themselves, certainly desperate enough, if there is a clause where it's only acceptable in cases of rape, to lie about rape.

So that's the issue. If abortion is illegal, then women will lie about rape to get one. And I believe 100% they will. They will have to - they'll be backed into a corner.

If abortion is illegal except in cases of rape, yes indeed innocent men will end up being charged with rape.

This is a good reason why abortion has to be legal. It is horrifying to have a law that forces a woman to have a baby caused by rape, but it's impossible to keep desperate women from lying to get an abortion if they need one. Women should not be forced to carry a pregnancy they don't want, particularly one due to rape, and men should not have to face false charges of rape. The only answer that makes sense is for abortion to be legal.

Women who want abortions because they were raped are lying sluts, according to most of the Republican Party. We know that they believe this. In addition to saying it, they legislate based on this opinion.
