The reason GOP hates public education is that it results in fewer GOP cultists.

GOP 101: Shocking increase in the percentage of Republicans who think college is bad for US

According to a Pew poll, a majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning people believe that higher education is bad for America — and the number has risen 45 percent since last year.

The poll found that 58 percent of right-leaning people (and 45 percent of people polled across the political spectrum) believe “colleges and universities have a negative effect on the country.”

By contrast, the poll found that 72 percent Democrats and left-leaning independents view higher education favorably — a number the report noted hasn’t changed much in recent years.

In addition to asking about colleges and universities, pollsters also asked the more than 2,500 people surveyed about their opinions on the media — and a whopping 85 percent of Republican and right-leaning respondents said they view it negatively.

View a graph of the Pew findings below via Twitter.

Look at that sudden change at about halfway through 2015 in the "Among Rep/Lean Rep" chart. That's awfully close to when Trump started gaining tv time.

GOP has been promoting home schooling and private, religious schools since at least the time of Newt. Faith-based education, as opposed to fact-based, results in a more malleable base. It is easier to deny climate change if you start with denying science.

Here's another interesting chart from the article linked in the tweet you posted:

Why Wal-Mart family foundation is spending $1 billion on charter schools

The foundation has spent more than $1 billion on K-12 education over the past 20 years, including $385 million to help start charter schools in poor communities. The new money will be spent in places where the foundation already has ties — creating new schools and developing "pipelines of talent," said Marc Sternberg, a former high school principal who directs education philanthropy for the Walton Family Foundation.

... snip ...

Charter schools were first created in Minnesota in 1992, touted as a way to promote innovation in public schools. Many of the schools that are privately run but receive public funding specialize in science, math or the arts; hold classes in nontraditional settings; and heavily involve parents. The Walton Family Foundation is involved in schools in about two dozen states.

... snip ...

The Walton foundation has funded charter schools since 1997 and says its start-up grants to 2,110 schools account for about a quarter of all charter schools nationally.

Charter schools are just another way to siphon public money from public schools, IMO.

Public funding should go only to public institutions.
