After ripping through the GOP's "deepest bench" of presidential candidates in decades, snagging the presidency with a little help from his Russian friends, and cowing congressional Republicans into submission, Donald Trump and his aides have found themselves continually baffled by the woman staring them down from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Initially, Trump was convinced Nancy Pelosi would give him border wall funding just as soon as she wrapped up the Speaker's gavel.
Apparently, he missed her subtle signal in their initial West Wing showdown after Trump suggested she was bargaining from a weakened position. "Please don’t characterize the strength that I bring to this meeting as the leader of the House Democrats,” she shot back. It was basically Oval Office speak for, "Back off, bitch."

Trump not only lost the battle that day, he ceded the entire war by claiming full and pride-filled credit for any shutdown that might ensue.

Several weeks later, Trump and his crackerjack team decided Pelosi was bluffing again
when she respectfully sent him a letter seeking to postpone the State of the Union until the shutdown ended. Despite the fact that Pelosi was constitutionally empowered to deny Trump access to the People's Chamber, Trump decided to press his disadvantage, sending her a letter on Wednesday asserting he would give the speech anyway. Mere hours later, Pelosi swatted down Trump's advance like a pesky mosquito, this time pledging to deny him access to the venue.

Backed into yet another corner of his own making, Trump threw a Twitter tantrum before finally admitting late Wednesday night that it was Pelosi's "prerogative" to delay the speech. Yet again, the White House was reportedly "caught off guard" by how quickly Pelosi bested them.

Ever since the shutdown began,................................

He's used to getting his way because he's used to dealing with weak people who want something from him or who he has leverage over.

Everyone he's dealt with in business wants his money.

Every republican fears his insults and ability to destroy their image with the republican base.

He has no leverage over pelosi and she wants nothing from him because he's already made himself a disaster area for non-hardcore republicans.

He wanted to be king of republicans and he got there by dismissing everyone else. Now he's finding out that insulting nearly everyone isn't a great political strategy.

Duh.

I think he has one arrow in his quiver: Being willing to walk away. That's his "Art of the Deal"
That's a good enough tool when you've got the leverage (real estate - they're not making more of it). Not so good when it's you who needs congress to give you money for a wall.

Speaker Pelosi credits public awareness and action.

From https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/12519-2/

And again, I salute the Minority Leader, the Democratic Leader in the Senate, for the work that he did to bring this – because in the House we passed – 10 times we passed a bill, working with our Leadership, Mr. Hoyer, ten times we brought bills to the Floor to open up government – to open up government.

And the most recent one that was presented on the Senate Floor yesterday was so simple. $12 billion, $12 billion for disaster assistance and open up government for two weeks. The Republicans said no.

I think the public weighed in. I quote Lincoln all the time. ‘Public sentiment is everything. With it, you can accomplish almost anything.’ We thank the public for weighing in so strongly, for paying attention.

And I think that will be the success of this conference. Again, as an Appropriator, I’ve participated in many conferences when we used to have them. This conference, that the public awareness is so increased and the public interest in it is so sharpened that they will see what the decisions are that we have to make and how those decisions. I thank you again, Mr. Leader.

She still needs the public to 'have her back'. Republicans would not have started peeling away from the pack if not for public pressure. We have to do our part when she calls on us.
