Bipartisan message to Trump: Don't let shutdown happen again

An announcement in the White House Rose Garden has ended the partial government shutdown for three weeks, but the message to President Trump from this Washington was clear late Friday: No repeat performance.

"Reopening the government temporarily is an important step, but we cannot allow it to happen again in three weeks," Gov. Jay Inslee tweeted.

"Federal workers need long-term security to do their jobs and keep the public safe. Shutdowns are not a negotiating tactic -- period."

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., voiced similar sentiments. "I encourage anyone who was hurt by this shutdown to keep the pressure on President Trump and his Republican allies not to go down this path again," she said.

Curiously, the clearest statement of impatience with President Trump, from a Western lawmaker, came late Friday from a Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The 49th state is heavily dependent on government services, notably in aviation and the Coast Guard.

"This has been a harsh and difficult time," she said, "and it has been particularly painful coming from a state where we are feeling the direct impacts of this partial shutdown, perhaps moreso than any other state out there.
