This bodes for an excellent future. AOC is, of course, very good at dominating a news cycle when she wants to. And she even dominated a couple of them last week. But then, during the critical two days of the shutdown, Thursday and Friday, she went media dark. Only a few retweets of fairly bland news articles on the 24th and 25th, until the bill was signed. Then back on to her normal tempo.
Anybody worried that she's not a team player needs to relax. She passed the ball at exactly the right time.

Democrats are like many families. Agree to disagree . . . but in Democrats case overall, they work for the USA's people for a better well being with positive futures for "everyone" not just one group of people.

Manchin voted for both versions of the funding bill.
Only one Democrat voted not to re-open the government.

(26,650 posts)Just a report on how a Senator voted on a particular bill. He was the only Democrat to vote on both bills. My Republican Senator voted on both bills too. He was one of 6 Republicans to do that, but only one Democrat. Just facts, no attacking.

(5,376 posts)Sorry, but you can't just whitewash her vote away.
AOC is a rare breed, she has the ability to change the right wing narrative, and too many people underestimate the importance of that.
Al Franken had that ability too, if you get my drift, peace.
United we stand, divided we fall.

Nancy is a general. Remember, she's the one who got Obamacare passed!

(61,706 posts)What we didn't see - and what Trump and the media were hoping for - was a break in the Democratic unity during the shutdown.
We saw some symbolic votes and some letters from some members of the House, but no serious, concerted disagreement with Pelosi's strategy.
That is strong leadership. Even Trump complained about the Democratic unity. He was counting on infighting. Didn't happen.

(67,782 posts)....so it was a moot symbolic vote.
There are many Democrats in the House who have called for doing away with ICE, they all voted for it.
There was one single vote against the bill. Actually in the course of a few days there were four single votes against the Democratic position.

(14,249 posts)I suspect the Speaker's team didn't know Ocasio-Cortez would vote no until she actually voted - otherwise, they would have talked to her (or her Chief of Staff or Legislative Director) and explained what was actually in the bill so that she didn't cast an errant vote based on a misunderstanding of the bill's contents.

(9,427 posts)It heartens me to see that the vast majority of them are smart enough to realize this and learn from the veteran. The skills and experience Nancy can pass on to them is invaluable, and while Nancy's career is coming to an end, the class of '18 promises to hang on for a long while. The amount of education they get now will determine the degree of difference they can make for a long time to come.
It could be Nancy's biggest legacy in American politics: a whole new generation of progressive Nancies.

I've been spending a lot more time on Twitter and it's clear we need AOC (and others) to combat the Charlie Kirk and Loony Loomer bullshit cuz it sure as hell won't be done by your GMA and evening newsbunnies. AOC has learned the plays... she's just executing them on social media which is perhaps a platform you don't understand. AOC, Bharara, Dean, Schiff, Lieu, Swalwell, Harris, Warren... it's refreshing to see strong Democrats so actively engaged.

(2,275 posts)Its very informative regarding some of the nuances of voting and party dynamics.
And I love the team action between Nancy and AOC. The narrative about Nancy as den mother to all the incoming freshmen Representatives is great.
If AOCs symbolic vote was against ICE Im all for it. It still sent a clumsy message even if she and her fledgling staff didnt quite grasp the contents of the bill (theyll learn and fast from this).
In any case, Im starting to feel hopeful about our Blue Wave (and the possibilities of a GREEN New Deal Nature knows we need a new deal for income (and power) inequality in the context of saving the environment.
