A host on Fox News claimed over the weekend that women are having recreational abortions.
After Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law allowing late-term abortions in New York, Fox News host Katie Pavlich spoke to Dr. Omar Hamada, who incorrectly insisted that there is never a reason to abort a fetus in the third trimester.
So this New York abortion law which allows abortion up til the day before birth is, essentially, a recreational abortion bill, Pavlich opined.
I thought it was a travesty, Hamada said of the New York law. You know, there are some reasons that we will end a pregnancy in the first trimester or other reasons in the second trimester, but theres absolutely no reason to end a pregnancy so that the child dies in the third trimester.

(25,895 posts)When you are pregnant with a fetus that is going to die in the womb, and you choose to let it happen that way, that's fine. But do NOT tell people who actually can get pregnant what they should do.

(149,699 posts)From a post by Melissa Bales on Facebook about late term abortions:
LATE TERM ABORTIONS ARE RESERVED FOR MOTHERS AND BABIES WITH FATAL HEALTH ISSUES.
WOMEN WHO WISH TO NOT BE PREGNANT DO NOT WAIT UNTIL 24+ WEEKS GESTATION TO ABORT A HEALTHY FETUS. It would NEVER be approved. Ever.
WOMEN WHO HAVE LATE TERM ABORTIONS ARE LOSING A VERY WANTED BABY.
THEY ARE NOT INHUMANE.

(36,747 posts)It should be one of the options considered for population control. If women choose abortion, they should get cash rewards for it.
A woman should have complete unfettered access to abortion at ANY time of the pregnancy. No restriction at all...period.
IMO...while progressive...the New York law is still too restrictive.

(36,747 posts)It encourages population reduction.
8 billion is too many. Each person is a carbon footprint. Thats the cold hard truth. Over the next 50 years we need to get back to 4 billion maximum.
Takket
(21,625 posts)and when abusive men start demanding abortions for the cash payout then what? Abortion will become a means of oppression even more traumatic and dangerous than prostitution.

(36,747 posts)Its a womans decision to make and theirs alone. I believe in rewarding them for making a decision that helps the planet in the long run.
Abortion should be as available as birth control.
Dont jump to conclusions.
Takket
(21,625 posts)of course it isn't......................... do you think all abortions and births are 100% the decision of a woman?????????????? That's the way morality says it SHOULD work, but not how it DOES work in real life.

(36,747 posts)Attitudes and mindsets need to change.
I think they will when we reach 500 ppm CO2.
One positive for the planet is that the cost of having children is skyrocketing. That just may do the job of population reduction itself.

(2,674 posts)What about a mother with 2 little boys under age five and gets pregnant, Wants the baby but starts having heart problems that grow worse, until it reaches the point where the doctors say the baby must be aborted or both mother and baby will die and two little boys will be left without a mother. This happened in my bother's late wife. She didn't want to lose the baby which was a girl, but it was aborted in late term to save her life. Her health problems finally caused her death when she was 46, but she did get to raise her boys.
Never listen or repeat any bullshit from Fox News!

(22,431 posts)During a press conference, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards told reporters that the new state-of-the-art fetus-killing facility located in the nation's heartland offers quick, easy, in-and-out abortions to all women, and represents a bold reinvention of the group's long-standing mission and values.

"Nineteen-year-old Marcy Kolrath, one of the Abortionplex's first clients, told reporters that despite her initial hesitancy, she was quickly put at ease by staff members who reassured her that she could have abortions over and over for the next decade before finally committing to motherhood. Kolrath also said she was "wowed" by the facility's many attractions.
"I was kind of on the fence in the beginning," she said. "But after a couple of margaritas and a ride down the lazy river they've got circling the place, I got caught up in the vibe. By the time it was over, I almost wished I could've aborted twins and gotten to stay a little longer."
"I told my boyfriend we had to have sex again that very night," Kolrath added. "I really want to come back over Labor Day."

(3,433 posts)Recreational? My wife and I discovered our son was not going to live to term and if he did, he would die shortly after birth if birth didnt kill him. The decision to end was soul crushing and devastating. I will never forget being in the waiting room while my wife was having the procedure done.. feeling powerless knowing she was back there suffering terribly and there was nothing I could do about it. For weeks we cried both because she had a miscarriage before and this preganancy was after months of fertility treatments.
The OB radiologist who gave us the diagnosis after the ultrasound was so kind and caring, I will never forget his empathy. When we eventually got pregnant with our daughter years later, he remembered us and his congratulations were so warm and hopeful. That is a truly caring doctor. This guy above. He can rot. There was nothing recreational about what we went through and what my wife went through.. I can never really understand.

(160,621 posts)Sun Hudson case
The Sun Hudson case concerned Wanda Hudson and her infant son, who was allowed to die via removal of his breathing tube, contrary to her wishes.
Chronology
Hudson gave birth to a son with an unknown father on September 25, 2004, at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas, with thanatophoric dysplasia, a typically fatal form of congenital dwarfism. She was informed that the infant was most likely unable to survive, and should have his breathing tube removed pursuant to Chapter 166 of the Texas Health & Safety Code, the Advance Directives Act. Under this act, a doctor's recommendations to withdraw medical treatment can be followed, after they have been reviewed by the hospital's ethics committee and after 10 days' notice is given to the patient or guardian. Hudson was given 10 days from written notice to find a new facility to accommodate the infant, but was unable to do so. Texas Children's Hospital states that it attempted to contact 40 facilities without finding a willing one.
Legal delays prevented the removal of the breathing tube, which would have occurred on November 28, 2004, but a judge ruled that the removal of the tube did not require Hudson's agreement. On March 15, 2005, Texas Children's Hospital personnel removed the breathing tube. Official reports state that he was sedated, and asphyxiated in under a minute. Hudson disputes this, and told reporters, who were not permitted entrance, "I wanted y'all to see my son for yourself, so you could see he was actually moving around. He was conscious."
The hospital lacked confidence in Hudson's mental competence; she was quoted by The Dallas Morning News as saying that she didn't seek prenatal care "because I trusted in the Sun", which she claimed fathered the baby. She also made similar comments during an interview with Greta Van Susteren.[2]
Bioethics implications
Bioethicists note that the case is the first time a U.S. hospital has been allowed to remove life sustaining support contrary to the wishes of the legal guardian and lacking advance directives from the patient themselves.[citation needed] This, the bioethicists claim, makes the issue precedent-setting in further cases where it may be applied. Early speculation as to its application was the case of Spiro Nikolouzos. Nikolouzos, however, was accepted at a San Antonio nursing facility on March 21, 2005, where he died of natural causes on May 30.
