Lets not get tangled up in debates about Assanges unsavory personality or conduct. WikiLeaks is an important investigative news service, giving us Chelsea Mannings inestimably vital evidence of official, deadly misconduct; US State Department cables about oil company crimes Ive used in my own reporting and yes, those Democratic Party emails about operations to subvert the Bernie Sanders campaign in possible violation of federal elections law.
By providing a haven for whistleblowers, WikiLeaks has successfully exposed crimes against our democracy. And Mueller, true to his FBI roots, cant stand it.
Did Russian hackers slip the DNC emails to Wikileaks to help their buddy Trump? Well, no sheet, Sherlock. I can tell you now that not every source of inside documents I receive is from a selfless informer. Everyone, including your mom, has an agenda. But neither Putin nor Assange forged the emails; isnt that correct, Mr. Blumenthal? Are we afraid of truth, of the facts?
Credico co-hosted a half dozen radio shows with Assange and visited him in Ecuadors London Embassy. That Mueller hauled Credico before a grand jury to ask about his contacts with Wikileaks should scare those of us who are trying to hold on to the last shreds of Freedom of the Press.
While I enjoy seeing that reptile Roger Stone get his time in the barrel, I am sickened watching Democratic pols and too many progressives, all in the name of cutting up Trump, applaud the return of a witchhunt against journalists and investigative journalism using tropes about foreign influence worthy of Joe McCarthy. Calls from the Left for censorship have a price: My own sites and outlets face real threats of electronic blockade and censorship.

(43,191 posts)It claimed to be one thing and turned out to be something completely different.
To the extent it ever had the mission you claim it did, it lost it the moment it became a Russian agent to interfere in the elections of other countries.

(7,652 posts)Palast is not advocating for the person, Assange. It's about providing an outlet for whistleblowers and a place for investigative journalists to sift through documents from whistleblowers.

(1,606 posts)But Wikileaks is not a whistleblower, it's an intelligence operation aimed at undermining American (and all Western) democracies. That's a fact. Maybe they didn't start out that way, but that's what they are now and can never be trusted again. Real whistleblowers don't selectively leak they way they do.

(7,652 posts)investigative journalists and whistleblowers. Palast has been on the ground doing the legwork and he is expressing concern. His reports on election fraud have been invaluable. I find it hard to just dismiss what he is expressing.

(1,606 posts)But Greg's legwork does not change the facts about what Wikileaks is.

(1,606 posts)And I suspect neither do you.
What I do know is that Wikileaks is not a whistleblower. Again, that is an easily proven fact.
If you want to carry the torch for Wikileaks, that's your prerogative ... but don't expect a great reaction here.
diva77
(7,652 posts)investigative journalist and that's why I posted his concerns here. I never said wikileaks is a whistleblower. My understanding was that it was a place whistleblowers could unload documents. That's all I know.

(3,333 posts)People have fed him leaks embarrassing to Putin, and he won't publish it.
The whole purpose of his operation is to damage Western democracy and help Russia.

(7,542 posts)No one from Justice tried to muscle Credico. He had knowledge pertinent to the commission of a felony. Assange relinquished whatever credentials he had as a journalist when he decided to move beyond reportage to conspiracy to violate U.S. election law.

(1,606 posts)and no more a whistleblower than Michael Cohen. Wikileaks is a hostile intelligent entity targeting democratic institutions of the United States (& the West) and deserves to be treated as such. Any ancillary benefit they may have once provided means nothing now, and in fact that's only trotted out as a way to sew further division and obfuscate the organization's true intentions.
If you're an American, Wikileaks means you harm.

(5,271 posts)also, there have been credible allegations that several of the DNC or Podesta emails released by Wikileaks in 2016 had been falsified and altered for propaganda purposes. Also the coordination and deliberate timing of the releases to help Trump and hurt Clinton serving Putin's aims to sway our election undercuts Wikileaks claim to represent investigative journalism and honest whistleblowing.

(33,606 posts)emails, which were no more than dirty laundry. They also gave us what Putin has on Trump then maybe I'd buy a tenth of the shit he is selling.
But go fuck yourself Greg.

(3,259 posts)The whistleblower aspect can be done by many outlets.
Also, Wikileaks has coordinated directly with Russian state run media.
Wikileaks is an agenda driven organization and simply releasing information given by others does not equate to journalism. That is a stretch too far.
