What do you have your heat set on?
It's 41 degrees here in Austin TX. To natives like myself that's pretty cold. It'll get down to about 36 tonight.
My heat is set on 68.0... because am a Texan and a baby!
I seriously cannot imagine the cold that is being reported in the Midwest! YIKES!
Check in here: What's your temp? Are you keeping warm?

That just sounds awful!!!

(25,895 posts)and I recall wind chills of at least that cold.
Not fun.
At the time we lived in the upper half of a duplex, which probably made our life better since we had the benefit of hot air rising. I can recall going down to pick up the mail and the temperature from our apartment to the mailbox being a LOT colder.
What I learned was to bundle up, although I already knew that from a childhood spent in northern New York State where temperatures were frequently -20 and colder, and who knew about wind chill in the 1950s?
Here's a story about windchill.
In 1970 I was living in the DC area. I happened to work for a small airline at DCA. In January of that year they were experiencing (then) record lows of 3, 4, maybe 5 degrees above zero. One morning, when I had a few days off and had decided to visit friends who lived in northern NYS, I waited for the bus to take me to DCA to catch the flight. It was so cold, and I was so miserable, that I was all but in tears from how bad it was. The radio had told me the wind chill made it feel like minus 20 degrees. Nasty.
So I took the bus (and it was at the bus stop that I was so incredibly miserable) and got on the plane to Utica, NY. When I got off, I laughed out loud, because I could tell the air temperature was -20, but it was no where near as awful as it had been an hour or so back in DC. And, sure enough, the large thermometer they had outside the entrance to the terminal clearly showed the -20.
Things like wind chill or relative humidity matter a lot.
Which is in no small part why I chose to live in Santa Fe, NM, where it simply doesn't get all that cold or all that hot, and since it's relatively dry here we don't have the complications that high humidity entail.

I hadn't turned it on in over 20 years and opted for space heaters until this year. Southern CA does get cold at night (in the 40s) so I finally put the heat on a few weeks ago and it does still work I am happy to say. I am not looking forward to my bill though. For a 500 ft apt it will be $150 for a month.

Lefta Dissenter
(6,622 posts)I shovel areas and paths in my fenced back yard, and I now have a big tarp out there with horse bedding (wood shavings) spread on it. Theyre learning that thats easier on the feet. My dogs are small (10 and 7 pounds), so they dont enjoy this weather at ALL. The older guy is very efficient at running out and doing his business and coming back in - all in about 20 seconds, but the youngster spends so much time sniffing around for the right spot that her feet hurt and she comes back in without having accomplished a thing. I was out with her earlier, trying to keep her on the bedded area and remind her to pee, but we were not successful. I might take them to a nearby horse barn tomorrow to let them run around in the indoor arena for a little bit. That could be a fun and productive adventure, unless we slide off the road on the way there!

(58,785 posts)windows open as much as possible also. Unfortunately, I usually wake up in the small hours, not pleasant getting up at 60, but I can't see heating the whole house instead of just the little sitting room off the kitchen that I head for in very cold weather.

(11,645 posts)Wrapped all the beehives with blankets today and brought a couple Nubi goats who could kid in the next couple of days into the basement. I do also have one of these weather stations up outside though and it says the wind at the moment is 2 mph... 7 degrees and "feels like" 7. I know the temp is going low forecast says -9 (I know thats nothing compared to you tough Minnesota DUers)... but I'm holding out hope the wind stays relatively calm through midday tomorrow... that would make a HUGE difference.

I grew up in upstate NY and we never really heated the upstairs. Just lots of warm blankets, so I love sleeping in cold air with lots of covers. I feel suffocated by the artificial heat.
