Make them pay a price for "primary" threats"...

That's the subject line in an email I just received. Here's the tag line:

Can you make a $27 donation to our campaign today as a way of saying we will NEVER let the political and financial establishment wage a successful primary campaign against Alexandria?

It's signed

Team Ocasio-Cortez

The Act Blue donation page states the following:

Your contribution will benefit Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

I find the "make them pay" language troubling.

....opponent spent about $2500? She is obviously expecting a primary challenge.

Who are "they", and does she define the "political establishment"?

By the way, based on her FEC filing, her average reported contribution was $248, a bit higher than $27.

elected official, isn't Cortez part of "the political establishment" now, or is there something I'm misunderstanding? The "establishment" label has pretty much lost all meaning with me.

for daring to consider running, not only sounds like the establishment at its worst, but also like a strong armed tactit.

I wonder how constituents of a district would feel about their representative building up the $$$$ from out of district/city/state donors to ensure that they will not have a choice at election time. What happened to democracy?

“We believe in primaries as an idea. We’re not upset by the idea of being primaried. We are not going to go out there being anti-primary — they are good for party,” said Corbin Trent, a campaign spokesman for Ocasio-Cortez and a co-founder of Justice Democrats.

It sounds like a hit job. I like her a lot, but here is a loose canon syndrome going on. When the press gangs on to everrything you say you really need to be careful of what you say and don't say. What works for candidates doesn't always work so well for those in office. I think she will learn as she goes.

But sending an email that a primary would be upsetting is great marketing for $$.

And the anonymous source who leaked the "Democratic plans to primary her" must have known that it would rally her supporters, who are very protective of her.

If you are in elected office you should expect and welcome a primary challenge. Wasn't she talking about backing primary challenges to some of her fellow Democrats? Why on earth would she expect to be exempt from such an important aspect of our democracy?

All I'm saying is... when it comes to fundraising, this person could have done a better job and taken a better approach other than the "be afraid, be very very afraid" model. And avoid the cliche boogieman buzzwords, too... that's my advice.
