Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell never wanted a government shutdown over funding (or lack thereof) for President Donald Trump's border wall. Shutdowns, McConnell argued, rarely work out politically for the party in power. "There is no education in the second kick of a mule," he was fond of telling anyone who asked.
Boy, was Mitch right.
In the wake of the 35-day government shutdown, a new Gallup Poll shows favorability for the Republican Party dipping to just 37% -- down from 45% when Gallup last polled the question in September 2018. (The Democratic favorable number was largely unchanged: 44% in September, 45% now.)
The same poll showed that 50% believed Democrats in Congress acted "more responsibly" in the shutdown negotiations, while just 39% said Trump acted as the more responsible party.
You don't have to be a polling genius to understand what's going on here. The shutdown -- the longest in American history -- tarnished an already banged and battered Republican brand. No ifs, ands or buts about it.
The Point: Given the damage they've already sustained, the prospect of another government shutdown in 16 days has to terrify every single Republican looking toward 2020. And what's even more terrifying? No one -- not even Donald Trump himself -- knows what he will do when faced with another shutdown showdown.

In other words, Republicans face an uphill battle to defend a President who is taking them and the party down as they defend their seats in the Senate and the House. They leave huge openings for Democrats running for office in 2020 to add to their ranks. THAT is good news for a Democrat to win the White House as well.

(2,648 posts)congressvermin would grow a spine, there would not be another shutdown, there would be no further discussion about the stupid wall, there would be no problem raising the debt limit, but instead there are sleazy, slimy, republicans who apparently love to lick trump's ass and kowtow to his irrational whimsys.
Yeah, those are the people I want in Government.

(3,496 posts)Nothing like trying to put out major fires on the first day you are in office. Can't help but think part of the reason Obama was demonized was he was doing emergency economic surgery almost from day 1 trying to stem the bleeding . Most polls I've seen contain a significant number of people who do not seem to remember that the Great Recession started under Bush/Cheney/Greenspan.
I hope the Dems #1 priority in 2021, assuming they sweep, is real tax reform and support of the old marginal rates we had decades ago. I think they will really only get to tackle one big project.

(3,496 posts)Especially how Trump reports it. What drives me crazy is why it took NY State this long to figure out Trump and his family are doing all kinds of questionable financial dealings?!? I guess the rich and well connected have a different set of tax rules than the poor and middle class.

(1,604 posts)We know exactly what Trump is gonna do ... he knows GOPers won't stomach another shutdown, so he's going to declare his "emergency" and send it to the Federal courts where he will get trashed.
Then he'll campaign/fundraise on the court loss and claim he did 'everything I could but the evil liberal cabal stopped me.'
Cillizza is not a good pundit.

(34,074 posts)But there are 6 numbers in that paragraph (unless my eyes crossed when counting). i agree that is likely what they are referencing - but if you are going to write an article declaring that one number establishes your entire case, you'd better identify it clearly and connect it to the headline claim.
