Read the whole statement:
"The moment Washington Republicans first heard Congressman Akins remarks their inclination was to defend him. They circulated his statement and encouraged the media to move on. Not until the establishment saw the political backlash and saw that this would hurt Republicans across the country did they change their tune."
Dont be fooled by the faux outrage. This is not about principle. Congressman Akins substantive position on choice is the official position of the Republican party. This is about Washington Republicans playing politics with the voters of Missouri, plain and simple.
The Republican establishment has poured millions of dollars into the campaigns of Senate candidates who share some of the same positions as Congressman Akin. Sharron Angle said that forcing a rape victim to carry the pregnancy was making a lemon situation into lemonade, and Ken Buck refused to prosecute a rape case because he said that the victims just had buyers remorse.
No one in the Republican establishment is standing up today to protest the party platform, which forces rape victims to carry their pregnancy to term. If Washington Republicans are not willing to stand up and defend rape victims when it counts, they should not have a say when Missouri Republicans nominate a candidate who shares that view."
"This is hypocrisy of the highest order.

(34,845 posts)He could not get Akin to quit the race. Who is in charge of the GOP? No one. It's beautiful.

(81,322 posts)Waiting til he saw how it was gonna play out instead of coming directly out front, like Obama did, and not mush-mouth it. He's a very reactive kind of person, at least if you go by his behavior. He's not a leader at all. He's a follower. Now, doesn't THAT sound nice? The Follower President? Who'll he be following today? paul ryan? rand paul? tony perkins? Who'll he be following tomorrow? todd akin? donald trump? grover norquist? the koch brothers?
VERY instructive about the "leadership" we'd have for the next four years if romney gets in.

(8,084 posts)the Koch Brothers were busy trying to get a refund for the money they poured into Akin's Campaign, they didn't have time to tell Mitt what to say

(81,322 posts)I wonder how much money they'll shit out their backsides on this campaign, and how much they'll have squandered by the time it's all over?

(7,403 posts)I thought for sure that the Republican establishment would be able to muscle Akin out. Not even cutting off funding could do the trick -- although I fully expect the money to come back quietly.
This does give me better insight into the problems Boehner has with getting anything done in the House. And the writer is correct, "this is hypocrisy of the highest order".
liberalmuse
(18,672 posts)that not only was all the outrage was just for show, but that Akin was told, 'Just hang in there - we're going to pretend to want you to step down and pull your funding, but we've got your back'.

(4,835 posts)I really thought that (by now) Romney would step forward, look all leadership-y and establish that he was the leader of the party.
It's beginning to look like even that ship has sailed.
They must have a foolproof plan to steal the election.

(1,370 posts)You can see it in their posture, hear it in their voices. They're effed, and they know it.
Romney is the disposable man. He's like a cheap gray tarp you pick up for $2.99 at Wally to cover the storm damage while you wait for someone to show up who can fix the gaping hole. Idiots haven't yet figured out they'll never get that hole fixed till they throw their mouth-breathing, fundamentalist, tea-party crotch-sniffers out.

(7,403 posts)Also, I was worried the Democrats would say something before the deadline that might help grease Akin's skid. The worry was unfounded as the Democrats showed the leadership that Romney failed to show.
